i would love to take my little man swimming but i've no one to go with - my OH works all hours! and i assume its basically impossible to go yourself cos how would you get in and out of the pool?!
can i ask other BF mums when did you try you wee ones on a cup? my boy wont take a bottle at all (of breast milk) or at the very least he puts up a major fight and the other day we put a cup up to his lips and he seemed to know what he was doing (he's 12 weeks) but i didnt want to try this again in case theres some reason not too - to early or whatever. Any advice? its just so i could leave him with my OH the odd time.
We cup fed from 5 days old in hospital - my milk didn't come in. We then used a doidy cup occasionally after that.

DS had swimming lessons from a private company at 14 weeks old, but I'm not sure if anyone does that in NI? There are only 6 babies in the class, and a coach to help us in and out.
You could always use a sling like this?

Booby problems help!! I'm BF my 12 week old (exclusively) and fr the last 3 or 4 weeks I've been having some problems, i got a blocked duct on the right side first of all and GP gave me antibiotics cos I had a temp with it, it seemed to go and then about a week later I felt my boob a bit lumpy and hard in the same place and then the other boob went the same way so I went back to GP last Monday and she said she was pretty sure it was blocked ducts again but she referred me to the breast clinic anyway, and I've got an appointment for this wednesday (what happens does anyone know?) but now both boobs are a bit painful and I think the lumps are away again but ones a bit hard in places. I keep freaking out (lumps in boobs always freaks me) but I'm trying to convince myself its simply BF related, has anyone ever had anything like this before?
Sorry to hear about the problems you've been having. I can empathise - particulary with my youngest dd (who I am still bf) I had blocked duct time after time after time at one point. I have no idea why. It was excrutiating at times and has left me with a much reduced supply on one side! This showed itself in a big hard lump under the skin.
There are a few things I did that you could try. I used lots and lots of hot cloths (started by using flannels run under v.hot water ... but it got very messy ... so I switched to booby tubes). Particularly I would do this before a feed.
Also - very gentle massage or 'combing' of the area (best done in the shower always using motions working towards the nipple). PM me if you want more info.
And - although it's been said time and time over - I would get my dd to feed as regularly as possible from the affected side.

Cathie, my 7 month old baby also won't take purees or many finger foods suitable for babies. I asked at the clinic and they weren't especially bothered - just said he was missing out first stage weaning and that as fine. I don't actually have any solutions - I just wanted to let you know you're not on your own!! He does quite happily breast feed though - quite worried I'll be still breastfeeding when he goes to school, lol!
People doing baby led weaning... any ideas for finger foods to offer? Tom appears to especially want stuff off my plate that he can't have and closes his mouth and turns his head to anything I give him. He was quite happily eating rice cakes but not refuses them; he will eat finger sandwiches with soft fillings and soft fruit but gets angry if I try to hold them and chokes himself if I don't. What do I do?0 -
chocoholic
Archie is 9 mths and eats mostly finger foods (big mess!) I give him all of these chopped up to about mouthful size
cooked to soft and slightly cooled (tossed in unsalted butter/garlic for the more bland ones as he hates nude pasta etc) :-
squash, carrots, parsnips, potatoes, sweet potatoes, pasta shapes, courgette/marrow (fried in butter ummmmmm), skinned tomatoes (I soak in boiled water and skin), toast,
and cold (fruits need to be ripe so soft)
bread, mozzarella cheese (yummy), normal cheese (not too much though as high in salt), banana, melon, kiwi fruit, avocado, strawberries (although these are a potential allergen so not if LO may be prone to allergies), blackberries,
I always take skin off and test for mushyness before serving as he will just chew and then gag on harder rubbery foods
Will add to list if further inpired!!MSE PARENT CLUB MEMBER.ds1 nov 1997ds2 nov 2007:jFirst DDFirst DD born in june:beer:.0 -
Gem - I found Joseph to be uninteractive for at least three months, spend the time doing stuff you enjoy, anything at all. He's so portable and won't mind where he is, I miss that. I remember thinking it was really hard having a baby, but with hindsight I should've enjoyed it much more, as it is the easy part. Just slightly stressfull.
cathie - Everything is just a phase! I absolutely hated weaning, still wish we were at the milk only stage, the fights I had to endure to get him to eat anything. All the teething and colds which set him back a stage - always back to sweet smooth purees. I now feed him when he's hungry (not crying, just hungry) - he doesn't get snacks in between - it means that when I do make anything wonderful he won't throw it at me in boredom. Finally after nearly five months he's starting to chew lumps and eat pretty much anything and enjoy food. As I enjoy mealtimes.:wall:0 -

Both the pool at our leisure centre and the pool at my gym have big wide steps into the water, so you can just walk into the pool carrying the baby, rather than have to go down a ladder. I would check out the access at your local pool.
They also both have a sort of changing table with a big egg shaped dip in it. You can get the baby changed, then leave them on there and they can't roll off while you get changed.
Sad news this morning - my Gran passed away in the nightHere I go again on my own....0 -

Sorry for your loss Becles.
On swimming - we went to classes at the local 'fun' pool which has a gently sloping entrance, a bit beach-style. I've also been at normal pools which are just shallow enough for you to sit on the side and slide in with LO in your arms. Can't remember how we got out though!
When Imogen was still in her baby car seat I would take that to the poolside lined with a towel and have another towel to put over her. That way she was warm and drying while I got changed. She was also safe on the floor. At other pools they have playpens and even change mats, so it's worth ringing round to check out the facilities.
On ideas on what to do, ask your HV what other groups there are in your area. We have a few stay & play (read mum's chat, babies sleep/gurgle) sessions at about £1 each, as well as BF support groups. Our HV team also did a first time parents class, which was a 6-week course. We are now a group of about 12 mums & toddlers with birthdays stretching over about 7 months. It's great though as there's always someone to meet up with.
