I attended a BF clinic when Samantha was 3-4 weeks old. It was for cracked nipples, but basically I wasn't latching her on properly and that is why I had problems. Never had blocked ducks but I can imagine the pain.

Part of the problem, if it is regarding latching properly etc, is when you are in so much pain, it is really difficult to do things properly because your natural instinct is to do things that minimise the pain.

Best suggestions would be to try different positions when feeding, - lie on your back and support baby with a pillow and rotate baby around the clock so that you are draining all those ducts. IT probably won't be possible to do this on each feed, but just pick up from where you left, when you feed again.

Also try and push for an earlier appointment with the BF clinic. If you contact your HV she might be able to refer you to another one that runs sooner. I actually went to every clinic I could for nearly a week as I found some were more helpful than others. One of the clinics was nearly 10 miles away but it was worth going ...

    Best of luck.

Booby problems help!! I'm BF my 12 week old (exclusively) and fr the last 3 or 4 weeks I've been having some problems, i got a blocked duct on the right side first of all and GP gave me antibiotics cos I had a temp with it, it seemed to go and then about a week later I felt my boob a bit lumpy and hard in the same place and then the other boob went the same way so I went back to GP last Monday and she said she was pretty sure it was blocked ducts again but she referred me to the breast clinic anyway, and I've got an appointment for this wednesday (what happens does anyone know?) but now both boobs are a bit painful and I think the lumps are away again but ones a bit hard in places. I keep freaking out (lumps in boobs always freaks me) but I'm trying to convince myself its simply BF related, has anyone ever had anything like this before?
I went to a breast clinic about 3 years ago. I was there about three hours as you had to wait in between each thing. First I saw the doctor who talked to me and did an examination. He then sent me for an ultrasound scan (they only do mammograms for older women) and then I saw him again and he did a biopsy (which was no different to having an injection really). I then had to go back another time to get the results (I can't remember how long after but I think it might have been about a month).

    Hello All

I am a new arrival from the pregnancy thread having given birth to baby Alex earlier than planned at 34 weeks. After 2 1/2 weeks in the neo natal unit we finally got to come home last night :j

This may be a silly question but .... what do I do with a baby???? Being premature he pretty much sleeps all day (but is wide awake from midnight to 0300). What activities are baby friendly? (Clearly he is not terribly interactive at the moment). I love MSE but I am starting to think that all day every day for my maternity leave might take the shine off it?

Thanks so much for any ideas and advice

  • Congratulations, Gem! Lovely name too :)

For now enjoy how portable he is and how you don't have to worry about what is suited for him - enjoy things for yourself. Pop him in a sling and go for a walk or go shopping, eat out while he sleeps nestled against you - he won't mind where he is or what's going on as long as he is close to you :)

Hiya, please help, I am having a bit of trouble with my 6 month old daugther, she has turned into a different girl in a week. She is teething and I am giving regular teething remedies and calpol etc to help get her through it.
However she has decided she will not feed while I am siting up (I am breast feeding) she will only feed if I am laying down, this is obvioulsy a little difficult when we are out and about (it's not that she doesn't want the milk she cries for it but will not take it if I am sitting).
She has been really miserable (despite drugs) which is not like her and she won't got to sleep on her own any more.
Weaning is another story too, she isn't interested in puree, she doesn't spit any food out once it is in, but she just won't open her mouth to accept food and on some occasions she crys as soon as she is in her high chair. She will chew on finger foods and seems to like strawberries and mango - but I guess that is because she it teething and it is soothing to her gums.
Is this just a phase? Any tips on how I can persuade her to feed while I am sitting up again.

Congratulations Gem and welcome, :D I wouldn't worry about the baby sleeping all day every day - they grow out of that sleepy stage quite quickly. In the meantime as daphne says the smaller they are the more portable they are by sling and the easier it is to get out and about. If your not in to the sling idea why not take LO out in the pram to the park/shops and let all the old ladies coo at him - that one is good for the ego.

Also if you are breast feeding and are in a sure start area there may be a b'feeding group you can go to - my local one is really friendly (although I don't go anymore as it's the school hols and ds1 is at home).

    Other ideas :-

buggy fit - exercise class with buggies usually at a local park .

baby massage - for when baby is older sign up asap, I left it till 3 mths to sign up and lo was 7mths old by the time a space came up!

    baby signing

    local bumps and babes...

Most of the classes you can go to are cheap if provided by sure start or community groups.

Hi cathy - can't offer advice on the b'feeding issue as that's a problem I've never come across although my similar issue was my LO deciding only to feed on the left at 4 mths...sadly I never really cured that just went with it and kept trying the other side until he started feeding on both sides again.

However with the solids I's suggest just doing finger foods for now, as LO will still be getting most nutrients from BM and doesn't need huge amounts of solids yet -there are many parents following "baby led weaning" like this and their babies are fine on this method.

Archie is teething to at the mo. (top two teeth) and when he is suffering with it he's not too much into his food either. I got a biccypeg for him to chew on last week and that seemed to help a lot but we've still got a fair amount to go:rolleyes: .

i would love to take my little man swimming but i've no one to go with - my OH works all hours! and i assume its basically impossible to go yourself cos how would you get in and out of the pool?!

can i ask other BF mums when did you try you wee ones on a cup? my boy wont take a bottle at all (of breast milk) or at the very least he puts up a major fight and the other day we put a cup up to his lips and he seemed to know what he was doing (he's 12 weeks) but i didnt want to try this again in case theres some reason not too - to early or whatever. Any advice? its just so i could leave him with my OH the odd time.
