we used various different cups and beakers but the best ones were nuby cups. they have soft teats like bottles, at 21 months we now use these and a melamine cup with a straw or a plastic bottle and a straw but she can only use these if she has help as she tries to tip up the cup!! i found the worst ones were the 'anywayup' cups, total waste of money, she couldn't get anthing to come out of them.

Re: cups, I guess I've been lucky that my boys have had no problems with moving on to cups. Neither of them ever drank from bottles though, which in one sense is a blessing, but not always, LOL.

What I have done (and I'm not saying this will work for everyone), is introduce the cup as soon as they start weaning. I've used the simplest Tommee Tippee First cup, and although it is messy, some of it actually goes into Alex's mouth. :D

He's 10 months and I haven't tried him with milk in a cup yet though - we'll cross that bridge in a couple of months.

All in all, I don't think there's a magic trick to it, it's just a question of trying different cups and approaches to see what works for you - good luck! :)

Took DS to drs yesterday and she has given him amoxicillin for his cough etc as she reckoned it could be an infection so was worth going in the end. Pain in the neck though trying to give him medicine though even with a syringe!!

tsstss7 - DS is same age as your LO and am also finding it hard with a cup. He would much rather I give him juice/ water in his bottle. I am trying the tommee tippee first cup as well but without much success at the moment but hoping the nursery will also try and get him going on it.

3kidsnomoney - I have a tommee tippee manual breast pump which was used about ½ dozen times that is gathering dust at the moment. If you are interested PM me your address and I will post it to you......rather it went to a good home than sit doing nothing.

I was wondering if I should move LO on to the follow on milk soon? Do any of you use this? He has bottle 1st thing, 3 meals and bottle at bed with the a possible extra 1 or 2 bottles during the day.

(sorry its a long post but at work so finally getting to catch up.)
Mum to 2 lovely boys who keep me busy.

I never used follow on milk - my then health visitor advised against it, said it was gimmicky and to stay with the original formula I'd used.

Hope the antibiotics kick in soon for him. I sympathise about the syringe thing, DD2 absolutely wouldn't take any medicine until recently. I used to put it in her bottle really diluted and get it down her that way, but only worked if she finished the whole bottle.

Hi all just wanted to ask all you mums of older babies do your babies drink from a cup/beaker with spout yet? and if so how old were they when they made the transistion from breast/bottle?

I ask this because I distinctly remember my hv telling me back when ds1 was little that babies should go on to a cup from6 mths, however my ds2 (8mths next week) has other ideas and will not drink from a cup at all - he is breast fed on the main but has one bottle a day about an hour before bed. I'd like to change the bedtime bottle to a bed time drink in a cup as he now doesn't fall asleep when he drinks the bottle so doesn't need it for the comfort factor. Plus I think he sometimes needs a drink in the day and I'm loathe to introduce water/juice in bottles, however cups are causing very wet clothes and not being drank from at all!!

    Any tips anyone?
We were the same as you (breastfed with one bottle). We started giving water with the doidy and the tommee tippee travel cup from about five months until she learnt how to actually drink from them. We tried both the Doidy and the other for milk but she couldn't drink milk out fast enough from either so didn't like them. We then got the easiflow beaker and cut out the valve. I can't remember when exactly we first tried it but I think we tried maybe two occasions with a break of maybe a couple of weeks in between before on the third attempt (about ten months) she finally started taking it. Initially she did find it a bit difficult because the flow was a lot faster than she was used to but she soon got the hang of it. I think also it took a while for her to recognise the beaker as being a thing which milk came in and so initially she would reject it because she didn't know it had milk in but once she got used to it she would grab it just like she did the bottle.

Charlotte has always had water or juice out of a cup, never a bottle.

She still likes milk out of a bottle, and it's only recently that I've managed to get her to drink milk out of a cup on a morning.

She still has one bottle of milk last thing at night which is more of a comfort thing I think. Will keep trying the cup on an evening, but that's always the hardest bottle to give up.
Here I go again on my own....

Haven't logged on for a while so sitting back with a hot choc and reading thru!

Becles, so glad you are enjoying the gym x

Heather, glad you had a wonderful hol x

Tsstss, re cups we have had allsorts since around 5m and Poppy took no interest whatsoever and just flung them around like a toy. At her 8m check, the HV said to always keep a freeflow one around and she will eventually take it if she is thirsty. My mum had me worried saying she wasn't getting enough fluids and would give her water off a spoon!!! Anyway, a few weeks ago we had a breakthrough and she has started to use the cup! Albeit the cheapest one we had bought (a Miffy one for £1) and she has lots of water through the day now and only 2 bottles a day, when she wakes up and when she goes to bed x

Hope Henry feels better once the meds have kicked in, Maz.

3kids, don't you just hate it when things break! Glad you have your replacement x

Maz, both my MW and HV also advised against follow on milk as they said Poppy can stay on stage 1 formula until she is one. I think they also mentioned the others can cause constipation? x

We have two new front teeth here at Camp SB! Poppy's top 2 have come through which now makes 4! No sign of any attempt to crawl or lift herself up yet though.

I had my consultant appointment last week and he's not overly concerned with me at the moment. My BP was lower that when I booked in so thankfully I don't have to go on meds for the time being. I'm having two extra scans at 28w and 34w to check all is ok which is fine with me! My 20w one is on 1st August and I can't wait!

Hope everyone is keeping well xxx

Here's a gravy recipe that doesn't have to include salt:

Personally, Alice didn't have gravy early on because we were doing BLW and by the time she was actually eating stuff she was ten months so I've not been too worried about salt intake.
