Quick question.. LO is eating homemade food at home and nursery and will have everything we offer him, no refusals so far, which is great :j but he now wont eat out of jars!

Charlotte has always prefered the more chunkier jars from an earlier age than it states on the label. She also likes the stronger tasting ones like the Heinz Globetotters ones. She eats them better if you warm them up, but that's not so easy when you're out and about.

I only took a couple of jars to Turkey and Charlotte ate the local food. Depending on what it was, I would cut it up really small or mush it with a fork, and she had finger foods too.

She has Oats So Simple or Weetabix for breakfast. She doesn't like the Weetabix with cold milk on, so I bung it in the microwave for a few seconds to take the chill off it!
Here I go again on my own....
  • Oh dear, am I the only one being conned into buying the special baby cereals?! :rotfl:

For some reason I didn't think I could give her ordinary ones yet?. Not sure why come to think of it! :o. For the under 1's, do you mix the normal cereals with formula?

Ellie wasn't quite 6 months when I started just putting whole cows milk in her weetabix, so no u don't need to use formula but I suppose you could if you wanted.

I only started giving Izzy Weetabix only quite recently at about 15 months - think I read somewhere (on here maybe?) that normal cereals contain a lot more salt than baby ones, hence why I delayed it.... so no SB, you aren't the only one that forked out.

Sept baby - we use the special baby cereals too for a bit of variety and as they are relatively easy to use. Recently got some short dated oatmeals from home bargains for 25p each on our holiday "up north" - bargain!!

I use formula with fresh boiled water to mix - we don't always have "proper" milk in as only ds1 has breakfast cereal with milk with any regularity (I make my porridge with water and add banana/raisins etc to sweeten or have toast OH doesn't eat breakfast) so we often run out. I think the occasional cows milk is allowed but don't really intend to switch till ds2 is 1 - having to always have milk in will be a bind, we only use organic so it means a trip to the local supermarket.

We never bought special cereals but we have porridge, egg on home made toast or pancakes so salt isn't an issue with them.

  • Charlie has weetabix normally for breakfast, loves toast in little squares. He tried fish, curryed vegetables (baby jar), cous cous and pasta over the weekend and ate the lot!

BTW farmfoods have 6 jars of 7 months + Heinz curryed vegetable favour for £1, there was also some other pots and desserts really cheap (sorry, can't remember exactly what they were!)

Alex has Ready Brek or Weetabix or Oatibix for his brekkie (yes SB, you can have them from 6 months ;)). Ready Brek is the healthiest one as it doesn't have added sugar or salt. Also, reading the labels, Oatibix is healthier than Weetabix, and has less salt.

He has whole milk in his cereal (has done from 6 months). I try to buy organic, but it's a hassle as smaller stores don't stock it (not in 1 or 2 pint sizes anyway).

We do have baby cereal as well (can't resist the extra points in Tesco, LOL :rotfl: ) but Alex tends to have them as a dessert or a quick snack sometimes while I'm waiting for his proper food to defrost. We use Cow and Gate and he loves the Blueberry one especially. They seem to be reasonably okay ingedients-wise, I mean there's no sugar in them or anything.

Jar-wise, he will eat Hipp jars and I think it's Heinz organic, when we're out and about. I've noticed he likes the pasta type jars better than rice type ones for some reason, even though at home he'll eat both pasta and rice equally happily.

But overall, I find finger foods an absolute godsend. He eats little sandwiches and stuff now, plus berries like strawberries and raspberries are a favourite (very messy though :D ). He's almost 10 months now but has been having fingerfoods from as early as he could hold a rice cake, it just makes life so much easier. :T
