And another question, I wanted to try using re-usable nappies, but I don't want to spend a lot of money and then be disappointed. Do you know of any place giving out some freebies to try out before I commit?

    And here's my Zuzanna:
I don't know about freebies but I think often nappy companies do trial packs so you can try them out without buying a full set. If you're prepared to try terry squares, they're pretty cheap and you just need nappies, plastic pants and pins (plus a nappy bucket but any old lidded plastic container will do - you don't have to buy a special one). You can get the same stuff at Mothercare too but it's cheaper at Boots and if you're in the Baby club you can get extra points too. We got some of our nappies second hand off e-Bay but some people have had trouble with the auctions being removed because they are classed as "used underwear" so not allowed.

    Lovely picture.

Have you had a look on your council's website? Some do freebie trial packs or money-off vouchers towards reusable nappies. (I got a trial pack from ours, it was good, but still didn't convince me :o but at least I gave it a shot :p)

Welcome to the club BTW, lovely photo. :)

Lovely pics from Bailey too, and Fac. :T Alex loves bits of cucumber, he gnaws the middle bit off so we are left with just the skins all over the highchair (same with pears )

Gazella77, she is beautiful and looking very wise :T

I heard about these nappy ladies, but in fact this morning at the mother and baby group I met one! Actually it was one of the mums I met months ago, just with a suitcase, as it's nappy week. Anyway, she gets samples from every company, so you can have a play, also she does an extensive array of samples, which you borrow for £20 to see what suits you best. Ask you HV where you can find one of these ladies. When I was pregnant I asked on here what I could use and the replies put me right off, I didn't realise there was a different nappy for every baby in the world . I don't think they're for me, but they are so very cute...

Welcome and congrats Gazella - that's a lovely photo :)

We did baby massage and signing free with Surestart when Charlotte was about 4 months old. We did 6 weeks of classes where it was massage for the first bit, then we had fruit and juice break, then learned some signs. There was a week where the lady from the library came in and did a taster of her song, story and rhyme session. That was fun, but it's on the middle of a Wednesday afternoon, so I never attended as Charlotte is always asleep then! We also did a week of first aid training including practising mouth to mouth and removing an object from the throat of a dummy baby. The last week was a weaning party and we got a bag of goodies including a cup and spoons! It was excellent and I really enjoyed it.

I put Charlottes child trust fund in shares. I invested with Foreign and Colonial after reading Martins article and reading up on the different funds. I'm not adding any money to it though, and will open seperate investments for her, that I can tell her about when the time is right ;)

I got blackout curtain linings from ebay. I think I paid about £15 for them.

My Mam broke the baby at lunchtime :( She was getting ready for work, and Charlotte was on her bed while my Mam was talking to her. The phone rang, so my Mam picked Charlotte up and held her while she spoke. When she finished, she was putting the phone back in the cradle on the dressing table, when Charlotte suddenly lurched forward to grab something. Mam dropped her and she bumped her head on the edge of the dressing table. She's got a cut above her eye and it looks like she is going to have a black eye - poor thing! Mam feels awful, but it wasn't her fault.
Here I go again on my own....

Oh dear Becles, poor Charlotte, these things happen though.

Last week Olivia was "helping" Izzy come down the stairs, but unfortunately she fell from halfway and bit her lip or tongue on the way down. Blood all over her face and clothes, but looked a lot worse than it actually was thankfully.

Then this morning she fell face first onto her Bounce n Spin zebra and cut her lip again, another big mouthful of blood.

Has anyone got any tips for getting them to learn stairs. I've taught her to come down sitting on her bottom holding onto the stair rails and generally she does it really well, but occasionally she just forgets herself and chucks herself down head first. It really gives me nightmares. Last week was the third time she'd fallen down them. We do have gates top and bottom, but unfortunately you are at the mercy of older siblings remembering to shut them, which isn't often!! Plus you then get the added danger of them hitting themselves on the gate at the bottom that was left open.

I've been teaching Alice to go down the stairs backwards but she hasn't got the hang of it yet and would turn and dive head first if I let her.

OH has a scar on his tongue where he bit it falling down the stairs at his Grandma's when he was about two. Apparently they sewed it up without anasthetic and his mum had to wait outside listening to the screams. It can't have been too traumatising for him though as he doesn't actually remember it himself.

OMG that is a horrible story.

    :eek::eek::eek:

I tried teaching Izzy to come down backwards but she just couldn't get the knack, had far more success in coming down on her bum. It's just when she suddenly stands up and loses her balance that we have problems.

Thanks a lot for all your advice:-) I will definitely look around and have a go at nappies.
I looked in Boots and couldn't find the plastic pants, need to look again.

    Becles, gosh, poor Charlotte:eek:

I also need to find out about mums clubs in the local area. I had no time yet as Zuzanna is only 2 weeks old and in this photo she was only 2 days and on phototherapy due to jaundice.

They usually have a small section which has washable nappies (terry sqares and shaped), plastic pants, washable training pants, nature disposables and swim nappies. Most of it is white and it's not always next to the regular disposables.

Maybe I'll have to try that and see if it works. Fortunatley it's very easy to stop access to the stairs from the bottom so she hasn't learnt to go up the stairs yet either. We have very steep stairs and our next door neighbour's boyfriend got seriously injured falling down her stairs so I'm quite paranoid about stairs access.
