  • My HV doesn't know we're doing BLW. We haven't seen her since 12 weeks when she came to talk about weaning and we only found out about it at six months when I started doing some research about starting age as Alice wasn't showing any "readiness" signs (unless you count putting things in her mouth which she's done for months)..

I had to hold my nerve ( and DH!s) not to wean DS before he was showing enough interest in food, and even now I think I probably did it a little early for him.
However, each of us does what we think is best for our children.
He can eat sloppy food with no problems, and solid stuff with no problems, but sloppy stuff with lumps is still a bit of an issue. According to a friend who is a paediatric dietician some children are just like this, and it's nothing we've done. I can imagine it being much more of an issue if we'd gone the traditional weaning route though - as then we would have had real problems getting him onto lumpier purees.

I have to say it saved me a lot of bother compared to some of my friends with babies :D
    The IVF worked;DS born 2006.

Charlotte was breast fed and most of her nappies were dirty ones - ranged from a completely plastered job to nothing more than a wet pump.

She's 7 months and on forumla and 3 meals a day and she poo's early morning so she's dirty when I get her up, and again late afternoon. The other nappies are just wet ones.

The HV mentioned that Charlotte should be trying finger foods now, but she's not interested in her own food. She pinches stuff from our plates if we're eating foods you pick up by hand, like cake or pizza, but if I give her a bowl with food in she either just squashes it through her fingers or feeds it to the dog
Here I go again on my own....

I don't know but would be interested to know too.

Personally am thinking, why not? Or I might use towels for the first period, just to make sure nothing weird comes out :o :rotfl: and then for the second one use the Mooncup.

And I really can't remember what I did after DS1...

Alex did a poo after (or during - charming! :o) every feed for the first month or so. Okay he was BFed but I think it's pretty common for all newborns to poo lots.

Talk to the HV tomorrow but I wouldn't think it's anything to worry about. Go with your instincts though. :)

Mine's nearly five months and still poos during most feeds and at regular intervals after feeds! If I wasn't such an MSE Mum - stocking up on 3for2s, bonus Tesco point nappies and 'freebies' from Asda using the Bounty pack vouchers - we'd need an overdraft just to keep him in nappies!!

Even though he's been on solids for a few weeks now - he still poos loads everyday - they're just more stinky now! :o I very rarely change a nappy without poo in it. I can't remember having a poo-less nappy recently - other than taking his nappy off at bathtime if it's a fresh one. Isn't it great how being a Mum makes you so interested in another person's poo!!! :D

I think most things that a baby does in the first few months are nothing to worry about - providing s/he doesn't appear to be unwell. Unfortunately, that doesn't actually stop us all worrying! ;) You get loads of contradictory professional advice too which is just great!

Re: baby-led weaning: My HV is actually quite pro this route and I'm not, to be honest! Based on my experiences with my eldest - it took a long time for him to actually get any finger foods into his mouth so I'd be worried that he wouldn't get any extra nutrition. (Babe's breast fed so iron will be an issue in a few more weeks.) Having said that - Ben is lapping up his purees and has already starting grabbing the spoon and feeding himself! His older brother wasn't doing that for a good few months yet! My baby might insist on leading the weaning anyway! So far, he's showing a preference for savoury purees although I think potato was a bit difficult for him. He also loves banana! I love this stage of weaning and I'd miss it if we skipped the runny stuff but each to their own. :)

Re periods: Don't know about mooncups but one of the best things about breastfeeding is the lack of periods! I'm going to be in for a shock when they come back!!! :(

I don't think it's all or nothing: I'm planning to take some bits of BLW and incorporate them into conventional weaning, or just make it up as I go along :D

Alex is 15 weeks and I'm getting the feeling he'll be ready soon. He seems hungrier more often, although he's still sleeping okay at night (touch wood!)

Dormouse, that's what I'm doing. Natasha has smooth purees, lumpy purees and finger foods, and seems pretty happy with all of them. She hasn't refused a single food that I've tried her with yet!

I asked my hv and she said she couldn't see why it wouldn't be fine for first period (probably worth mentioning that it is not ok to use them for post natal lochia bleeding due to risk of infection etc).
