  • hi everyone...

quick question, have any of you had a formula baby that poo's in every nappy? (and i do mean EVERY nappy)
i havent changed just a wet one since he was brand new, they all have poo in... and im wondering wether its 'normal' or something we should be concerned about thanks to all the feeding difficulties we have had...

my DD poo'ed about twice a week but she was breastfed at this stage...
i dont know what normal is for formula babies,
his stomach goes rock hard and a bit of a weird shape, he has awful wind... and we could honestly change his nappy every 10 minutes and not be able to keep him clean and dry (and now he is getting a sore bum because of it)

im thinking of getting some liners... any thoughts?

    thanks xXx

Hi CG, I know it's not unusual for breastfed babies to poo after every feed - generally I think bottle fed babies go less often, but every baby is different. Does the poo seem normal? If it does, I wouldn't worry. I would only be concerned if it was like diarrhoea (is that how you spell it ), because he could get dehydrated.

But he's very young yet, he will probably settle down eventually and start going once a day-ish.

    this one certainly is! :rotfl:
he has made me feel like a first timer! the little ratbag! :o

hard to say if the poo is "normal"... what is normal?
    its normal for him
im thinking its just because his bowels are still immature, it took a while for his liver to start working properly and get rid of the last traces of jaundice (about 2 1/2 weeks) so maybe he is just slow to start thanks to everything else he has had going on!
as long as he has put on weight again this week, i cant say i that worried... its just a pain when you know its never a "quick" nappy change, its always the full clean up (especially in the middle of the night when im half asleep... cos thats when he will pee on me too! lol)

ive been reading stuff online but you get tons of people saying 'yeah my baby poo'ed in every nappy, waited til 5 mins after you changed them and then poo'ed again' etc...
but then you read someone saying 'ohh thats not right, my sisters baby had this and they had this wrong with them....'
and your back to square one!

seeing the HV again tomorrow... will ask her

Hope he's put on weight and the health visitor manages to put your mind at rest.

Oooh, that reminds me, I'm supposed to be going to baby clinic today but it's chucking it down....I might give it a miss. (It's a walk-in clinic, so I haven't got an appointment)

  • CG, why don't you leave a message on your HV answerphone and maybe someone can call you later, to help put your mind at rest. In any event just to make sure he is absorbing properly, they will probably say all is normal and its just a pain in the bum (haha). Your always going to get someone who knows a baby who's...............and its always different answers and probably completely different to your baby.

If he were mine, that's what I'd do. Pooy night nappies are the worst, I've only ever had a handful luckily, but then we've had our fair share of other problems too.

    Good luck.

Alex did a poo after (or during - charming! :o) every feed for the first month or so. Okay he was BFed but I think it's pretty common for all newborns to poo lots.

Talk to the HV tomorrow but I wouldn't think it's anything to worry about. Go with your instincts though. :)
  • My HV was very unimpressed at the BLW though! So we ignored her, and took advice from the midwives at the baby cafe.
My HV doesn't know we're doing BLW. We haven't seen her since 12 weeks when she came to talk about weaning and we only found out about it at six months when I started doing some research about starting age as Alice wasn't showing any "readiness" signs (unless you count putting things in her mouth which she's done for months). I've never been to the baby clinic because it's not at a convenient time (would have to cut her nap short and feed her late   ) and I've never had any particular concerns. Weight wise I just stand on the bathroom scales and then stand on them holding Alice naked and look at the difference (we've got digital scales). I figure it's no less accurate than their weighing bearing in mind the baby is going to vary depending on when they've fed etc (an 8oz feed is half a pound) and the important thing is the overall trend rather than the precise weight.

at 13 months kennedy has on average 4 dirty nappies a day! she never poos at night though, i've only had to change 2 dirty nappies in the night since she was born. her poo is very different now she's on food and formula rather than bf...those where the days!
i would speak to the gp if you are worried there is a nasty stomach bug going round atm. my oh has it, and he feels rough. but if he is well in himself i wouldn't worry to much, what formula is he on? it might be that you know.

This is what I tend to do too. Although (this is really embarrassing :o) a few weeks ago, I was weighing myself on our bathroom scales, and was shocked to find I'd put a stone on. TOTALLY freaked out. Then I realised I still had Natasha in my arms.... :o:o :rotfl:

Sounds just like something I'd do :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Off to fat club ;) tonight, fingers crossed I've lost. I need the structure of a group to help me lose. Want to have lost a stone by Xmas and still have 4.5lb to go. Not sure I'm going to make it, ho hum
