The Iphone has the better screen and better selection of premium apps, has better build quality, and just feels a lot better in the hand that the plasticy SGS2
Samsung also has a habit of not letting you update to the latest Android versions, and when they do they're usually months being Google phones - Samsung is currently working on updating the SGS2 to Android 2.3.4, which is about 4 months old.
Hold off a couple of months for the Iphone 5.
My SGS version 1 is better than my colleagues Iphone 4 imho. It has a MUCH better screen in terms or depths of colours, depth of blacks, viewability in bright sunlight and viewing angles, but of course the iphone 4 has the higher resolution, so the uninformed will immediately assume it is better.
Also my SGS is running gingerbread 2.3.4 officially, and although there is a delay between Google releasing it and Samsung, it is only a few months at most, so not anything to worry about.
Build quality of my SGS is fine - it is a year old and in mint condition with no creaks even tho I don't have a case for it.
As to apps, it take it that when you say premium, you mean you pay a premium, as there are definitely more paid-for apps on the iphone. However, there are equivalent free apps on the android market for pretty much anything you can do on an iphone, and if there isn't yet then there will be.0 -

I think the uniformed would easily be swayed into the Galaxy S screen was better too, which can also be wrong. It's a trade off between colours that "pop" (and aren't entirely realistic) or very sharp text (with more realistic colours).0 -
Ironically Samsung make the screens for the iPhone.
The only other consideration may be the sim as the Samsung AFAIK takes a regular sim where the iPhone has a micro sim.

Personally as a start i would looks s to what apps i wanted to use .
Probably far more games and stuff for Iphone .
Me i wont buy into locked down Apple as a personal choice and run a SGS2 ith no apps that i need missing from the market .
IPhone 5 may only be the upgraded I\Phone 4 to 4S is a rumour .

Pop into a shop and have a play with them both to see if you like one more than the other... and also look at what apps you need/want and whether they are available on both platforms, then decide
Personally I would never choose iStuff, too locked down for my liking, (and yes, I have a S2 which is a fantastic device) but the "best" phone is always going to be whichever one matches your needs.

Wait for the iphone5 - if it's basically an iphone4s as is being muted then there is no competition, the galaxy S2 blows it out the water and is a far superior phone.
the screen is better, the camera is far far far better, it has a dual core processor, can be easily rooted to allow you to put what YOU want on the phone as standard not what apple/samsung want you to run, it has video out capabilities too which is nice.
Can you tell I like mine?I actually think the iphone4 is still a decent handset but the game has now moved on and it's always been vastly overpriced by the networks.

Are they though. Yes a few manufacturers have been slow at updates, but are the phones really obsolete?
I mean the OSF even without modification is still fairly decent at all the main things.
I have a HTC Desire which received the 2.2 upgrade and even at what year and a half HTC is looking to get 2.3 Gingerbread put on it.
There are a lot of new versions of Android phones but very little difference in them and I wouldn't worry about obsoleteness.
My iPod 1G is not completely obsolete despite being 2 and a bit years old and stuck on V3 software although some apps now don't run.
For me Android too has apps for free like Angry Birds rather than £1.29 or whatever a pop on iTunes. Although I don't get the whole 'app' culture for some things when the websites cover things as well at times!0 -

As long as the hardware can cope, the clever people over at XDA-devs can and will port pretty much anything regardless of what the manufacturer does (or doesn't) supportFor example, my trusty "old" HD2 which is native WinMo 6.5 can also run Windows Phone 7 and 7.5, Android, Ubuntu and MeeGo, and we can dual-boot too... Needless to say, I decided to keep the HD2 even after getting the S2 simply because there's so many goodies available for it

Being as the iPhone 4 is a year older than the SII, the SII should by all accounts be a better phone.
Not had a play, so can't comment.
I have an iPhone 4, borrowed a friends Desire S a few weeks back to see if I fancied a switch to android, used it for a few days and found the Android market lacking when compared to the app store.
You won't find all the apps on the app store on android, you'll find some, but lets be honest, right now, it just isn't a good. Stuff does turn up on the android market, but it's usually a few months down the line when everyone who had it off the app store is over it and moved onto the next app.
I'm sure in a year or so it'll be as good. There's more people getting involved now etc. But right now, if it's apps/games etc you want. Then you want something with the app store.
I'm not slating android here btw, so all the fanboi's can calm down. I think it's fantastic, but the truth is, android market, right at this moment, isn't as big and diverse as the app store. And OP stated they want a gadget with plenty off apps etc.Sigless0
