I didn't read the original thread.
I rarely do nowadays when the OP states "I'm a regular poster using a different name", or words to that effect. I now see that as being a synonym for 'troll'.
Yers, that's unfair to the genuine 'regular posters using a different name' - and no doubt there will be some, maybe including the OP of the thread being referred to.
But, I really do think that this board (like others on MSE) is being comprehensively - and successfully - trolled by people who present themselves as 'one of the community'.
That's not good for the community. And it's not fair on those (few) posters who are genuinely 'regular posters who have changed their name'. etc
I totally agree. Several of us discussed the possibility of this being a trolling thread soon after it started and nothing changed my mind later.0 -

Oldernotwiser did you think Poppys thread was a a troll post? I'm not disagreeing but I read it as being genuine0 -

but...how great a mum can you be if your 15 year old (therefore likely at 14, 13 etc) is having sex with school pals and thinking thats normal?
just a question!
My friends daughter was pregnant at fifteen and kept the baby - she now has three young children and is an excellent mum with delightful children.
Certainly not an ideal situation but it has turned out ok.Here dead we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
And we were young.

Sadly I think people were reporting posts to abuse just because they had a different point of view, this seems to becoming a problem on MSE, if someone doesn't agree with a post they're reporting it. The forum team posted a few days ago warning that if people didn't stop reporting things just because they didn't like the content they would find themselves banned. I saw quite a few posts on that thread saying they'd reported someone when, in my opinion, there was absolutely no need.
If something is posted on a public forum you're going to get a variety of opinions but they shouldn't be reported unless they genuinely are spam or abusive. Using the report button just because you don't like what's being said causes unnecessary hassle for the MSE team and threads end up being locked.
If Poppyfields is reading this I hope your DD is well and the meeting she had yesterday helped.
Absolutely. There were too many people thinking this was some kind of 'mumsnet' and reporting people left and right 'for being nasty'.
Far better to ignore it. To keep a non moneysaving thread open it really needs to attract no work, a pity some folk are so short sighted to keep reporting stuff that really should just be ignored.0 -

I understand fully why people want to talk about non-financial issues on this board and also why MSE Towers can't support that. I do see both sides and I think it's just a shame. People clearly need some sort of outlet to discuss the emotional side of life, as well as the financial but MSE Towers doesn't have the resources to police that. It doesn't matter how friendly a chat starts, when it's about emotional issues, someone always wades in with a different (upsetting) opinion and chaos follows.
I think the solution is either to get out of the mindset of being too scared to post in the Arms (I personally don't use that board, I prefer to visit a small number of more 'specific' boards) or to have advertising on the Families & Relationships board and maybe a few more BGs.
Martin has always been quite clear about not wanting advertising on his site, but equally, he says that he can't afford to invest paid staff resources into dealing with squabbles that actually have nothing to do with moneysaving, which is the whole point of this site.
Perhaps if the community said to Martin that it was happy to accept the provision of advertising on the Families & Relationships board only, in return for more freedom to discuss more personal topics, something could be arranged? Given how important this board seems to be to the MSE community at large, I would imagine any advertising would be supported, generating enough revenue to hopefully neutralise he cost of this particular board's traffic.

i do not know whether the original thread was genuine or not, and i did read 99% of it
i dont know whether this was its rightful place or not
however, assuming it was genuine
the OP posted for help/advice & peoples opinions
that is what she got, good & bad
that is what she, & her daughter will face in the real world
even the small percentage who were nasty for the sake of it (which i dont agree with or think were being helpful, but that is the reality of life, sadly)
if she wanted fluffy & roses round the door, posting on the net wasnt the place to get it, there were an incredible amount of helpful posts, even POVs that may not have been what she wanted to hear but were expressed sympathetically
its sad to think if someone was in genuine need of help they would get flamed for posting "in the wrong place":(0 -

And she was very dignified in her replies to the posts, never jumping down the throat of people who were really nasty.LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012
