Asian supermarkets usually sell both in 5 litre bottles - good value for money instead of the little bottles you get in the major stores

Malt vinegar is malt vinegar. The brown stuff will do any job that the clear one can, the only difference is that the brown stuff is usually coloured with caramel which will do just fine for all cleaning and laundry jobs.

The cheapest place I've found to buy it, other than in 5 litre containers at my local asian grocers is Aldi or Lidl which they sell for around 27/29 pence a half-litre.

Asda is even cheaper. Last time I bought a few bottles it was 17p per 500 mil.

That's 34p per litre. (or 1.70 for five litres)

    (Thanks Pink :))

I buy mine in 5L plastic bottles in the local fishmongers. I have also seen it being sold in fruit and veg shops locally. It is probably worth asking if you have either of these locally to you. I think I paid £2.25 each for them (usually buy a few as we do go through a bit and I have to pick them up when I have the car). I have bought the little glass bottles in As*a before but with two accident prone children around I would rather not use glass bottles

They're not the same - the clue is in the name. Malt vinegar is brewed from malt. It is of course acidic so will have some of the limescale removal properties, but you're much better off using white vinegar for cleaning and laundry.

The other advantage of getting the cleaning one, which is more pure, because it's basically just acetic acid and white vinegar (so leaves less residue) is that it's normally supplied in a trigger bottle - like this: http://www.dri-pak.co.uk/white-vinegar.html

    :)

No they're not the same, but in my experience they are equally effective. Honest :)

I also notice that dri-pak don't dare tell us the price of their lovely spray bottles ;)

Manufacturers aren't allowed to do that any more...although they can give an RRP. I've seen them in bargain stores for 99p for 500ml.

Ouch. And presumably that's 99p for diluted vinegar?

The malt I buy is under twenty pence and then I dilute it at around ten to one for windows, and four to one for general cleaning. I use an old (thoroughly washed out) spray gun that once had a "proper" cleaner in it :)

So between two and five pence per spray gun load.
