As said before, the distilled clear stuff is white vinegar. The smell does not last when used in washing machines, as cleaning fluid etc, but you could add some drops of lavender oil, tea tree, eucalyptus or mint to cover the smell in the container etc. (I've just listed the strongest but cheapest essential oils.) You can also macerate actual bunches of lavender and or mint in the vinegar to both scent and colour it if you happen to have an excess of fresh herbs in your garden.

You can use bog standard brown malt vinegar, there are no magical properties to the clear that the bog standard does not have, except to the seller who charges premium price

...if you look at the Tesco Value (or your own supermarket's equivalent) vinegar you will probably find it is distilled vinegar with a small amount of colouring to make it look like malt. This is the cheapest vinegar, and works fine.

Also, if you want to buy it in bulk google Chinese Supermarket in your local area.

I found a local one and bought a 5 litre container for about £2.50 if not less.

Thanks. Sorry for other thread didn't realise there was one already
  • Hi guys, I was googling info about white vinegar when I came across this thread. From skimming through the first few pages it appears that distilled malt vinegar does indeed classify as white vinegar.

Basically, I bought a bottle of 'distilled malt vinegar' from asda, which is totally clear, with the intention of using it for laundry. I heard that soaking jeans in water/white vinegar and then washing with white vinegar in the softener drawer will help 'lock in' the dye.

    see www dot ehow.com/how_10000808_wash-denim-prevent-dye-running.html

    and

    www dot ehow.com/how_8321344_set-jean-dye.html

So will the vinegar I purchased be suitable for this purpose? I wouldn't want to wreck my jeans! Also, I've already washed the jeans (one of the pairs twice, the others once), will this still work?

    Thanks guys

I am presently using white vinegar as a conditioning rinse on my hair. I was told it would have conditioning benefits and the smell would go when my hair was dry.

The time is still out as whether its a conditioner but i went out in a bit of a rain yesterday and by the time i got home (and hair got wet) i smelt like a vinegar bottle.

    I'll see how it goes.
