morganlefay wrote: »Honest, I have searched all the threads about using vinegar to clean the washing machine, and I understand about doing a hot wash with a cup of vinegar to keep the machine clean. BUT people on here also seem to be putting vinegar in the wash almost instead of conditioner. My question is: is using vinegar in a wash in order to soften the clothes without using conditioner, or is it to help keep the machine clean (like the hot vinegar wash)? I never use conditioner anyway, so why would I want to put vinegar in with my clothes ? Sorry to be dim.....
I use neither vinegar or fabric softener
The theory behind using vinegar is that it reacts with the limescale in the water, so can be a fabric softener, and reduce limescale in the pipes.
Does this answer your question?

I find it makes my towels softer than if I don't use it.... other than that, it's mostly for keeping the limescale down. Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

I have ordered some denim material to make some trousers and the supplier has told me to wash them with a cup of vinegar for the first few times.... so does this 'fix' the colour and stop it from running?"People buy things they don't need, with money they don't have, to impress people they don't like" - Clive Hamilton on Consumerism.0

I use vinegar for two reasons:
1. To eliminate odours
2. To soften towels
I always use it in the rinse part (ie the fabric softener part) of the machine and only about a capfull. You don't smell it and it works really wellFeb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790 -
