I use vinegar for two reasons:
    1. To eliminate odours
    2. To soften towels

I always use it in the rinse part (ie the fabric softener part) of the machine and only about a capfull. You don't smell it and it works really well :)

I use it for these reasons too, an added bonus is keeping limescale down.

I like the antibacterial properties when i`m washing a load of dog towels as these are often muddy this weather and i only wash these at 40 degrees.

Oh and i no longer buy the white distilled stuff, for the last 12 months i`ve been using the value vinegar at 13p per bottle. Ok its brown but that dosen`t affect the clothes in any way, even the whites.

    Hello everyone

Am slowly but surely getting in to the OS ways. From the tips on here I used white vinegar to de-scale my shower head, I used to buy those specialist de-scalers but I have to say the vinegar did a much better job :D

My question is - once I've de-scaled can I then decant the vinegar back into its bottle and use again (for de-scaling, not for putting on my chips :rotfl:)?

    TIA

You can, but it will slowly lose its strength and descaling power over time :D

on a simialr note how much vinegar is needed to do a an effecive job at descaling - I guess for a shower head you use neat, but say in a washing machine I hear talk of a splash but this must be so diluted but the amount of water the machine uses I onder how effective it can be

  • I think the "splash" you're reading about is the vinegar being used in the machine as a fabric conditioner so the descaling is an added benefit over time.

yes I just fill my machine drawer to where it says max for the conditioner with white vinegar and its great and doesn't make the clothes 'niffy' either I have just done a washload and hung it out this morning to dry in the sun.The clothes not only feel softer with vinegar but they have lost that 'soapy' feel that conditioner seemed to leave It must be good as I normally can't stand the smell of the stuff at all.

For descaling a shower head you could use any plain old cheap brown vinegar, would be much cheaper than using the clear vinegar

I also use cheapo brown in my washing machine as a clothes softener, as others say, it does not make you smell like a chip shop
