I telephoned the internet banking helpdesk and after holding for 68 minutes finally spoke to another human being. I was able to get my mobile number added to my account and therefore request the one-time access code. This is now working, have tested it.
Once I entered the access code it asked me if I wanted to use the same PC again next time so that I will not have to request an access code again. This will work fine until I clear my cookies again.

However for anyone who has yet to register, I would say don't ignore the mobile phone number option but make sure you include it.

Didn't you mean to say 'The Tesco spokesman' not 'The Santander spokesman' ???

Hope he's not trying to login to the Santander website ... that would explain everything

Thanks. I have now corrected my post. My mind was obviously still on the poster who was moving from Tesco to Santander. :o

I'm going into it open minded not having been a customer before.
Anyway, they surely can't be any worse than Tesco!
I requested the account last night, just been emailed with account number and it is up and running already, so no complaints so far.

Tesco is (was !) better is some respects - I've also been a Santander (Abbey) customer for nearly 40 years so can compare as I have both a/c's.

The beauty of the Tesco Internet account was that you can (could) schedule transfers for future dates.

The Tesco Faster Payments capability is (was) wider.

The noteworthy thing for me is that today I also made the 'transition' for my Santander accounts to their new 'safer' online setup and it worked faultlessly (unlike Tesco). It even added my Santander credit-card which was up to now accessed from a different site !

It's also worth noting that Santander, at least with my accounts, requires a mobile number to access for certain things you do. It sends your mobile a msg with unique digits in it which you then have to quote back when doing the process at that time 'live'. That might be tricky for some....

My scheduled transfers also disappeared so have transferred today instead but like you not yet received in other account it was normally extremely fast, have now opened a Santander account
  • As far as I can see the 'technical problems' are not just about logging on to the account, which I eventually was able to this morning. So far the problems I have incurred are as follows:-

    1. My HSBC bank account which I previously transferred my savings to now has the zero dropped off the beginning of the account number making it an incorrect 7 digital account number. Does not allow the facility to change the account number or sort code, only the name of the account. Therefore set up another account but not clear if it should be linked or third party link (what is the difference).

    2. Set up payment account in linked and third party. Sent £1 payments and none of three payments I sent have arrived into the account even though they are supposed to be faster payment within 2 hours. Sent at 7am this morning and still not arrived.

    3. Tried accessing site from work. As expected, got the message stating it will send a code to my mobile phone. Did this and got through OK and clicked yes button to ebable this PC to access each time without text code. This does not work and each time it still sends text. Third time it took 90 minutes for the text to arrive which is way above the 10 minutes you get to key in the code.

Not confident in tranferring any large amounts of money out yet until I know it is working correctly. Amazing how I can transfer money straight in immediately from HSBC but not the other way round. Never had any problems on old system.

The only good thing is the old keypad is no longer required which is good as the battery has run out!

Thanks, I shall listen with interest but as problems also occur AFTER logging-in/new setup I think it is is the tip of the iceberg and the horror stories will get worse !

Certainly for me with transfers, which has also been replicated for 'begbeer' above.

When I called to report, my problems were 'new information' for them....

Yep, same for me as reported earlier BUT I hadn't bothered to go into usability issues yet - of which there are many !

For starters, when transferring the only info displayed to the required payee available is the payee name, which spookily is usually your name so they all look the same ! I have to either remember which entry in the list is the one I'm after or select one-at-a-time until the right account numbers are displayed !

The 'old' version displayed all the payee details, so you select the right one immediately....
  • Started on Monday at 9am entered details on all pages as instructed on snail mail delivered handbook, double and then triple checked everything up to No7, instead of the promised "congratulations you've upgraded your online banking details" i got "we are sorry we have been unable to enter your details, this is our fault, please try again later" thereafter same as others on this thread blank screens or "redirected by server in a way that will not connect"have had all the different messages about how all is sorted and everyone now can log on and read the lies on the beeb and at money supermarket, still cannot log on, all i ask for is the truth which i have not had, whats wrong with "look we're sorry there's been a massive **** up will those who need money urgently phone this number, those who can hang on for a week please do so to give the needy one's more chance". So as soon as i am able i shall remove my money (near to the maximum FSA limit) elsewhere, probably under the bed in gold bars, and don't forget they've changed the sort codes for one off transfers which we have to change ourselves..... online!
