Thank God we do have the pill and various other methods of contraception available.

However, they still aren't foolproof, anybody who has sex , unless they've had a hysterectomy, is at risk of pregnancy. Its not just a matter of luck because you can dramatically reduce your odds, but yes, there will always be a few unlucky ones and they could be the most sensible, intelligent, mature girls around.

Heck, I'm bordering on paranoid regarding contraception but I've still had a couple of scares!

I was on the pill for twenty years, as were most of my friends, and nobody ever dreamed of "doubling up" contraceptive methods unless they'd been sick or had the runs.

Having "accidents" whilst on the pill seems to be quite a recent phenomenon!

You should have been doubling up, what was protecting you from STIs?

I could link you to the statistics on failure rates, but it won't make any difference to your judgemental and holier than thou attitude will it? Did you miss the recent news story where even the very effective implant has a failure rate amounting to hundreds of pregnancies each year?

Ah, the 'sheltered life' rebuttal, used to dismiss anybody with a more positive view of the situation regardless of their experiences. If you're willing to dismiss and castigate a whole section of the population based solely on age, I suppose that's up to you, I suspect you'd be up in arms if anybody tried that about the over 50s!

Oh and I don't actually think I need patronising career advice from you, thanks anyway though.

I wasn't giving you "careers advice", patronising or not. I was making a general comment on the need for clear sightedness when dealing with teenagers.

It's interesting though that you think that my opinions are "dismissing and castigating" anyone when I was purely being descriptive of teen behaviour.

My pill baby is 18 now. I hadn't missed a pill been ill or anything. I had no reason to think I was pg and thats why I didn't find out until I was 5 months gone.

    It does happen.

Also known as stereotyping. Please enlighten me, how do all 25 year olds behave? Or all 60 year olds? Clearly we can lump everybody together by age group, right?

That's the voice of the post AIDS generation and shows your lack of understanding of the past. STIs weren't that common then (even with multiple partners) and were easily dealt with by a visit to the "clap clinic" and a course of antibiotics.

    Not a student of Sociology I see.:rotfl:

A whole academic discipline written off as "stereotyping" - how silly!

Spot on ONW, when we were teens there was no 'doubling up' Condoms were another method of contraception. STI's were not as widespread and far less publicised and AIDS hadn't been discovered.

Is that actually a medical fact or do we just talk a lot more openly about such things now?

Right, but things have changed. You saying 'Nobody doubled up in my day and we were fine' has zero bearing on the situation under discussion, and if your intention is to convey that its ok to rely on one form of contraception and that one should always be enough to prevent pregnancy, well that's just an irresponsible viewpoint.
