My latest phone-around was largely unsuccessful - maybe the increases in interest rates and suspicion of "stoozing" by customers have made the banks more reluctant to offer balance transfer deals. The only offer I accepted was from Co-op (5.9% for 6 months without a fee) - even increased my limit! Will put it straight via Egg 1% cashback into offset mortgage - APR about 3.9% so a good days work.

I tried both Egg and Barclaycard on Monday.

Egg said no way and the only offer would be the anniversary one which isn't til July.

Barclaycard said nothing is on offer at the moment so I said I'd like to cancel the card. The chap I spoke to said to wait a couple of months as new deals are coming out all the time. I should've stuck to it as maybe an offer may have appeared but I said I'd wait a month or so then ring back to cancel if I haven't heard anything.

Anyone had luck with this approach at MBNA, asking for a simple extension to an existing low rate BT.

I have a 5.9% ending this month. i cant get other cards at moment but have an Egg which is empty (rate now silly high). I was going to BT to Egg (free outside offer months but they just give me one which is crap bah) leave it for a few weeks and then BT back to MBNA who I am sure will offer me another 6 months at 5% kind of thing.

My question is has anyone tried saying" I have £x all on cheap BT rate which is coming to an end, my plan is to BT it elsewhere when time is up do you want to keep the business and extend the period or some similar deal"

MBNA always seem keen to do business, any opinions?

Further to my query above. I called as time for action is approaching. They said no to extending but can offer me 3.9% for 6 months or 5.9% for 9 months both no fee. So will mule the money into Egg and back into MBNA.

Sounds like a good plan. I think the MBNA rates are per annum so the 6 month deal will cost you just under 2% and the 9 month deal just under 4.5% so think the 6 month is a lot better. Check it for yourself before deciding and will also depend on the deals available in 6 or 9 months' time.

I rang A&L card services (MBNA) to ask about a BT of £10000, was quoted 5.9% for 9 months with no fee or 2.9% for 6 months with £225 fee, said thanks very much will think about it and hung up. Rang back 5 minutes later spoke to someone else and was offered 2.9% for 6 months with no fee which I duly accepted.

Was offered 0% no fee for 6 months yesterday by LTSB. Had to quote the similar deal by another provider before this was offered. Quotin Ulster Bank did the trick.

Best that LTSB have quoted me recently is 4.9%. They have done me 0% in the past but that was with a fee.
  • I just asked both LloydsTSB (mastercard) and Natwest (Visa Gold card) what they could offer me in terms of Life Of Balance transfers (both cards have been at zero balance for a year now).

LTSB offered me 7.9% with a 2.5% fee which isn't great but might do for dumping a Cahoot loan that's just shot up from 6.9% to 14.9%.

NW wouldn't offer me anything for life of balance but offered me 0% for 6 months with a 2% fee capped at £49.

Neither are particularly exciting and I wouldn't even be thinking about them except that I have to buy a new car abd need to magic some cash from somewhere. (My plan is to go the route of the M&S &More card combined with an Egg Money card to get myself a 4.9% loan with the repayment flexibility of a credit card, but I'm still waiting to discover what my M&S limit will be, and the Egg Money card hasn't arrived yet, so I need a plan B and C).

    Hi all,

Was offered 6.9% for life of balance transfer by Halifax (classic card) yesterday, 3% uncapped fee.

Does anyone have any thoughts on who between Capital One and MBNA are more likely to offer a BT deal once the existing balance has been paid? I have a limit of £5500 on both and will be able to pay one card off, hoping to pay the one that is most likely to then have an offer on... and then BT the other card on to it!

    Cheers all

MBNA have always offered me good deals when I have had no balance on the card. This is just my experience though, it may be different for others.
On my card though there was a BT fee of 3%, maximum £75 but I got a letter a couple of months ago to say that there would be no maximum fee on BTs soon.
