Not as good as 0% .........but for those who are trying to reduce their interest rate charges on debts:

COOP is offering me 5.9 % on balance transfers for 6 months if transactions are done via the phone - No fee. (If you use their cheques there will a handling fee of 2% - minimum £2 - max £25).

Beneficial - 5.9% until 31.08.05 - No fee on transfers or the use of their cheques.

    Barclaycard has a 5.9% & a 6.9% LIFE deals going also.

    Hope this helps.

I forgot to mention that I successfully re-negotiated a further 6 months balance transfer rate with MBNA yesterday at 0.9% APR. I was charged a one off fee of £50.00.You need to do this via the “Loyalty” section on 0800 –7831116.

The best balance transfer rate that the customer service staff on the usual number can offer you is 3.9% APR.

P.s – I spoke to a very helpful member of staff in the loyalty section and I could not persuade her to waive the fee or even extend the timescale to say 9 or 12 months.

Believe me I tried very very hard!!

Watch out for Halifax/Bank of Scotland(not the Royal) because they put a hidden surcharge on balance transfers using their cheques, which they post to you. I carfeully checked the fine print - only to be caught out because they claimed the info was on one of the fliers accompanying their mailing.
Also, if you have a CapitalOne 0% balance transfer check the expiry date VERY carefully - my March statement said there would be no interest charged next month and when i received the next statement there was a "purchase interest" fee 9even though I hadn't bought anything and they meant the outstanding balance (which I presumed would still be interest-free for one more month). When i contacted them i received the usual glib "you should have checked" even though I pointed out that their statement said othewise.
Live and learn ... and don't get had.
By the way, isn't this website excellent?
I thought the Motley Fool was cool, but this seems even better.

Capital One certainly have poorly set out statements. On the front it says words to the effect of "Estimated interest next month if you pay the minimum balance £0.00 (please see reverse for further details)"

Then on the back in amongst a mass of print it says "Please note: the interest charged will differ from the figure shown if a change is made to either your interest rate, your statement date or if you make and new transactions on your account before your next statement"

I got caught like you (lesson learned, that was the first and last time I only recorded the month of the 0% expiring not the exact day) but I kicked up enough of stink about how misleading it was that they refunded the interest and charges. It took 3 phone calls and a letter mind you and their call centre has to be one of the worst out there.
If only everything in life was dreadful!

MBNA now charge a BT fee of upto 3%, with no max quoted! Info on letter received yesterday with promo code BTR06 (BT rate not quoted I have to call them for their latest promotional interest rate offer)

IMHO the BT fees are getting excessive now especially on short term "low rate" BT offers.

It depends on the terms and conditions of the MBNA card that you hold and how long you have had the card. Both my MBNA cards have a 2% fee with a max of £50. I know some people have 2% with a max of £35 and some people like yourself have 3% with no max.

I'd appreciate some advice on getting additional 0%'s on threatening to cancel...

6 months ago I phoned up Goldfish to cancel and got 6 months at 0%.

It's nearly up so I called Bank of Scotland to cancel.. When they said why?, I said the same thing - I'm cancelling the cards I don't use and ONE'S THAT DON'T HAVE EXISTING CUSTOMER OFFERS.... They said.. OK - that's all cancelled!!!!

So I phoned Accucard. They took a few £ payment to clear the account & said call back in a few days & we'll cancel it.

What am I doing wrong.... ? Or are time a-changing....?

I received some cc cheques from the Halifax yesterday, 6.9% life of balance no fee if used before 17 June, also transfer over the phone using promotional code before 17 June. Not sure if this open to everyone or selected customers, it is a Halifax One card btw.

I just recieved these cheques from Halifax patchman - The day after I phoned them up to cancel the CC.
When asked why, I gave the usual 'non competative rate' - To which she asked what I thought was compentative. I answered "3.9% Life balance transfer or 0% for 9 months".
I seem to remember seeing that on the 6.9% Halifax cheques/letter it mentions a purchase rate of 25.9%(ish) which I found strange cos the my purchse APR was approx 15%. Can't be sure cos they're now shreaded.
  • yep, I got the same cheques from Halifax last Friday - 6.9% life of balance transfers valid until June 17th. So I thought I'd call a few others to see what they would offer. Got 3.9% life of balance from M&S &more, which they're doing a good job of not advertising. I think that equals the best life of balance around at the moment. Just goes to show - if you don't ask, you don't get.
