MSE News: Scottish Power to hike energy prices

I have gone online to get a quote for the cheapest tariff. According to the list produced the cheapest is Capped June 2013 Version B (NSC) but although when I have entered my annual consumption which according to my calculations put us into a Medium User bracket and the cost on the tariff for SP is £1100 for a Medium User, according to their calculation from my annual usage we are not a Medium User as the cost comes out at £1289.47. I have just spoken with SP and they calculate my usage to come out at £1363 based on a full year although we have only been with SP for 9 months (don't know how they arrive at that figure). They say the Capped Rate June 2013 NSC is the cheapest for us and the reason the annual usage was calculated as more was probably because we had a bad winter last year and the fact that we are now retired we will probably use more anyway so according to them the Capped Rate is a better option for us although they will increase our Direct Debit to £99 per month from £91 per month (partly due to a debit on the account of £45), they say it represents a good buy as it is capped for 2 yrs.
I do hope so, I can't face keep going through this pullava every year. The good news is that we are hoping to move within the next twelve months and can take the rate with us, so no cancellation charges apply.
One good tip I was given by the operator at SP was to enter my readings every month on the same day to calculate the cost and keep track of my usage and thereby it helps to keep the direct debit down to the same amount and helps you get a good habit of tracking your usage and switching things off to keep the cost down ! :T
Good tip apart from the impression SP are giving that their new tariffs seem to hammer those who try to conserve energy.0 -
Well that IS interesting. The article states that Scottish Power have said that the tariff in question, the direct12 is now fully subscribed. And when i checked on their website, sure enough they don't have ANY discounted tariffs!!
So what on earth is going on? Are they fearful of this latest scrutiny and are "working on it" as they state?
It is the shocking percentage rise, far more than they stated, that should be in question. We can all work out which is the best tariff for each of us,according to what we are currently,or will be ,paying.
Watch this space(or rather,theirs!!)
Seems to be a PR disaster.Looks like a straight on line comparison with other providers then? .However what we are faced with now is no SP offer on the table but the clock is ticking in terms of avoiding termination charges. What an unholy mess.:mad:0 -
I have finally sorted out this whole sorry mess with a phone call to SP, which amazingly got me through to an advisor in about a minute.
I requested that they transfer me to OES14 straightaway and I gave them up to date meter readings and that`s it all done and dusted and no penalty for changing tariffs.
From the very start when increased prices were announced, I went to energyhelpline and entered my yearly usage and the biggest saving going from my current OES12 was to OES14 followed by their now defunct tariff Oct 2012.
I wasn`t interested in a capped/fixed because they have racked up these prices out of all proportion.
I would have preferred to wait to near the end of July but you never know if the tariff you`re after will still be around by then.
End of the saga
until the next time.0 -
fwiw, I notice when I log into my SP web account, Direct Oct 2012 still appears to be available under 'Change My Service' -> 'Discounted' -> 'SP Direct NSC' at the time of writing.
I notice the paragraph relating to £42 IGT surcharge has been omitted from the PDF file for the Direct Oct 2012 tariff too.0 -
I phoned SP to discuss options with them after finding on their site one tariff that would cut our current costs by over £500 if you include the coming rise.
They said they could only offer a capped rate that was actually £50 per year more than this year! And that was if we went all on line and paid a huge monthly direct debit.....difficult given our limited income.
I said I would have to discuss it with my mum (she is 85, paralysed after a stroke and I am her full time carer). Then asked could I sign up on line if we decided to stay with SP as I could not agree to this without talking it over and considering the option of moving.
Being in our position with lots of medical equipment making our bill £2100 per year before the rise we have to make our limited income work as I had to give up my job to be her carer.
Anyhow I then tried to access my account on line and it has been blocked! The SP site says I can no longer access it owing to them having been notified of a change???
I have sent an e mail asking what is going on but just got a remote reply so far.
Why would they do this? They are not exactly giving us reason not to find a cheaper supplier.0 -
Has anyone got a freephone no. for Scottish Power?0
