MSE News: Scottish Power to hike energy prices

I`m on OES 12 and have just done (yet again) another search on energyhelpline.
My best switch is to OES 14 with a saving of £189
Whereas a switch to Npower Go Fix 6 is way down the list with a saving of just £40
Something doesn`t add up somewhere and there are at least 4 fixed tariffs with better savings than Go Fix 6.
1 from EDF fixed saver V2
1 from Ovo New energy fixed
2 from SP Capped energy 2013 NSC and with a Standing Charge
So how going from OES12 to Go Fix 6 is better
I don`t know.
It will depend on your usage and what region you are in:
Taken from USwitch, region 20 (Southern):
Annual Gas 9179KWh
Annual Electric 2640 KWh
SP OES 12: £825.81 (With August 1st rip-off price rise)
SP OES 14: £659.12
NPower Go Fix 6: £696.55
Hence with £40 cashback from sinmply switch I can fix for approximately the same price as staying with SP!0 -

Agree it all depends on your usage, area and if you have econ7.
Everyone`s different and that`s why it`s important to put your actual annual usage into the switching sites.
Wish my switch was as easy as your`s.
With my figures OES14 comes out best and for a capped EDF0 -
I was SO confused by the number of options on the Scottish Power site I sent them an email and asked which I was on and about switching away I got the following message:
Your account is on Online Energy Saver 12 service package which will end by 29 February 2012.
There is a termination fee of £30.00 and £20.00 for Electricity and Gas account if the account is closed before the above mentioned date.
I have replied
The original email from you (sent Monday 13/6/2011) about the proposed price rise states:
If you don't think these prices are right for you, please contact us and we will be happy to discuss your options with you. You are also free to end your agreement by changing your supplier.
So does it mean FREE or £50.
What odds I get a sensible answer?

Scottish Power have emailed me the upcoming price increases from 1st August 2011 and they are considerably higher than the press have told us - 55% increase in one case. DON'T BELIEVE SCOTTISH POWER the rises are far higher than they want us to believe.
My tariff for electricity:
1st 225 kWh per quarter. - Current 16.828p - New 21.464p = 27% increase.
All day remaining kWh - Current 8.513 - New 11.186 = 31% increase
Night units per kWh - Current 3.983 - New 5.391 = 35% increase.
My tariff for Gas:
1st 670 kWh per quarter. Current 4.853 - New 7.569 = 56% increase
All day remaining kWh - Current 2.821 - New 3.474 = 22% increase.
If you are a Scottish Power customer check your new tariffs!0 -

Have already done so and agree - electricity increasing by 30% and gas by 55% - disgusting ! :mad:0 -
Strange that,i phoned at 2pm and got through in 25 mins,on the freephone no.Couldn't imagine having to wait 2 hours though, that would drive me mad,and in any case it isn't free after an hour!(or is that only numbers you normally pay for but get free at certain times?)2kWp Solar PV - 10*200W Kioto, SMA Sunny Boy 2000HF, SSE facing, some shading in winter, 37° pitch, installed Jun-2011, inverter replaced Sep-2017 AND Feb-2022.0

Knowing this, and having already added wording to their cheap online discount tariffs to the effect of 'limited availability', what is stopping them from pulling these tariffs nearer that time forcing people to either stay where they are or switching to an equally over-priced fixed/capped tariff?
Err think about it. SP wont withdraw any of their fixed/capped tariffs because they want existing customers to move to them.
Other energy providers are unlikely to withdraw/raise their tarriffs until they have scooped up SPs customers.
I see no problem with waiting till the last minute before dumping SP.
I'm leaving SP regardless. No other supplier has such a confusing multitude of tariffs, half of which I cant select from my SP account login.
When I factor in the 11p a day IGT that SP charge me even British Gas' standard tariff is cheaper than any of SPs tariffs!0 -

Most of the energy companies have tariff end dates anyway so have to fix the price until the end of the tariff so cannot increase their prices if you are already on a fixed rate. They can only increase their prices if you are on standard, capped or discounted rates. Having said that they will all follow suit and there will not be much between them, they are crafty in the extreme!0 -
Just switched from OES 11 to OES 14.
I was told OES 14 isn't affected by this price increase but may be affected by future price increases and warned that I would be taking a risk (trying to sell me a capped rate basically). I'm told I'm stuck with OES 14 until Aug 2012 (unless I pay a cancellation fee) but I'm betting there'll be a way around it if the price goes up again.
My bill just dropped by £1 a month! lol.
Your bill only dropped by £1 a month from 1st August onwards. For the next 6 weeks you are voluntarily on a much higher tariff than OES 11.
Should have told SP that you reject the price rise and want to change to OES14 on 31 July.0 -
I don't think they would allow that,or else everyone would be doing so .Correct me if i'm wrong, and if someone has succeeded then we all ought to know!!0
