I have kindly been given a slow cooker and, having never owned one before am not quite sure what I'm doing. I am making beef stew in it tomorrow, but was wondering:-
    - can I cook dumplings in it?
    - If yes, how long will they take to cook as it's a "slow" cooker?
    - Also do I put less liquid in than if I was making a stew on the hob?
    - The cooker I have been given has 2 compartments. Does it matter if one is empty? Or suggestions for what to put in the other side please

Please help make my first meal a success.:T
Just about to sort out my clutter....honest!:rotfl:

    Hi,

I'll try and track down the thread but the usual reply is put them in an hour before the end of your cooking time AND that time should be extended by 20 minutes because lifting the lid cools the meal down slightly.

I would say that they could. After all they are only uncooked frozen dumplings. You might want to put them in about 2 hours before your stew ends.

All there is in these dumplings is flour, suet , salt and water.

The only thing you are saving is a bit of time in mixing your own.

But your paying a lot more for them than using basics that are already in your cupboard.

Have a go at doing your own.

Mix together and drop in slow cooker for 25 minutes.

Does Aunt Bessies really take 2 hours to cook:eek:
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • i have used aunt bessies dumplings, i put them in the oven when i was cooking dinner then threw them cooked into the slow cooker, they tasted ok to us but we'r not really fussy, i think i put them in the oven what it said on the pack , about 12 minutes??

er - I have never used frozen dumplings or those packet mixes. what is so difficult about mixing together some flour suet water and a little salt (and i like to add some herbs to mine)? they then take twenty minutes in the stew or casserole and are huge fluffy delicious dumplings just like my nan taught me!

The question wasn't "has anybody tried" but was "can you".

That question has indeed been answered.

I haven't tried this with Aunt Bessies myself but I can't see any possible reason for not thinking that this will work in exactly the same way as it would for home made dumplings - and that, I know for sure, works a treat :)
