 Please do not, under any circumstances, cook your dumpings  in a slow cooker... Or anywhere else for that matter :D;)

I do dumplings in the SC but I turn it up to high a while before I put them in, and they take a bit longer than if done in the oven :)

    Yep! :)

Remember that when you lift the lid on the slow cooker, it takes about twenty minutes to get fully back to temperature.

So... when adding dumplings I normally drop them in about an hour before serving. That's me cooking most often on low.

If cooking on high then 30-40 minutes before should be fine.

Slow cookers vary, and I don't think you can overcook dumplings in them :) So I play safe and aim to be sure that they are cooked.

We have an older thread on this (link below) so I'll add this thread onto it to help keep all the answers in the same place.

    Hi bananadog,

I add them towards the end of cooking. This thread has more advice:

I'll add your thread to that one later.

Thanks so much for the quick replies, kids will be over the moon...especially middle son as he doesn't eat potato so dumplings are a great alternative for him! :j:j:j

  • To add to those already discussed - about an hour before. I sometimes add herbs, or wholegrain mustard to my dumplings to jazz 'em up a bit!

    Hi of course no probs
    suet free dumplings
Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food book has a non-suet recipe for dumplings....

    For 12 dumplings

    250g SR flour
    125g really cold butter
    salt & pepper

    Put flour in bowl
Use a course grater to grate butter into the flour
    Add a pinch of S&P
    Rub together until breadcrumbs
Add a small amount of water until binds to form a dough
    Make into dumplings

Add to stew/casserole (half submerged) for about 30 mins in 190/375/Gas 5 oven

I cook these in slow cooker for about 45 mins on high

I always used to do my dumplings in the SC, BUT I changed my slow cooker and the new one makes awful dumplings. It seems to have loads of condensation on the lid which falls onto the dumplings making them really soggy. Does anyone have any ideas how to make them nice again?
