Page 10 gives the required dimensions,11mm between digits and 33mm between the groups AA127 ABC. It is measured at the closest points of the digits.

How will anyone 100% know without removing the plate. It is perfectly legal to have it marked on the reverse, the reason why checking for it was removed from the MOT.
