Hi all, I have just been stopped by the police and fined £60 for an apparently illegal number plate but its fine !!! I had it on the car and it passed its MOT so I don't understand. Its not the orig number plate but the spacing is all fine, exactly as it should be. The Police didn't take any photos to show otherwise and I don't understand what the issue is...?

What can I do...?

What did they say the problem was? Illustrate with an example registration like AB12 CDE if that helps...

It should be T500 OHH, so they were right.

There are loads of cars flying around with illegal plates mostly private personal ones and until this post I have never heard or seen anyone being stopped for it.

But yes your plate is illegal so change the plates and pay the fine a fair cop.

They do indeed stop people, and IIRC if they stop someone with a personalised/vanity plate more than once, they can pass it on to the DVLA who have the option of recalling the plate (remember your registration number remains the property of the DVLA), and issuing a standard age related plate instead*.

It's the sort of thing the Police tend to do if they're either on a crack down, or something about the car has twigged their suspicion and they haven't got a more pressing matter to deal with.

I'm actually surprised it passed the MOT if it was blatantly wrong, as it's one of the things the test should from memory fail on, or issue an advisory for.

*Which can really annoy someone who has paid a lot for a vanity plate and deliberately ignored the regulations to get it to look more like their name etc.

What font (typeface) has been used. If it is fancy one that can't be recognised by ANPR devices, you'll get a ticket. The plate should also have the manufacturers name on it somewhere.

With the full stop above being the screw head on the plate?
