You should have eaten indoors, she is not allowed to smoke indoors, personally I think it entirely selfish of you to take up the seat a smoker could have had.

    :rotfl:

I was very polite about it, you know. I simply tutted, and scuttled off, making very cutting and witty remarks... in my own head. That told her.

how effing rude is this? My partner and I don't share a bedroom, it seems perfectly normal to me - we have our own reasons. What right have you to say it is not normal?

    Are you serious?

So they should have sat indoors and eaten just incase someone wanted to sit there who wanted to smoke??

That works both ways though. Should the smoker have avoided that bench, and not smoked, just in case the other person was offended by it?

Not agreeing with it, as I personally think smoke around food is vomit inducing, but playing devil's advocate.

    No :D

I was serious about the being rude bit though.

Not sure I agree that's rude. There are only a few places where people can smoke outside, whereas you have far more options of where to eat (whether indoors or outdoors). So, I think it's a little unfair to expect her to give up one of the only remaining places to smoke, so you can eat your lunch there. What made you more entitled to that space?

In the circumstances it was rude, as there were loads of benches in the public area - she came and sat next to me with that kind of defiant air, you know when people are kind of spoiling for a fight? Like she was expecting me to harangue her - some people are just like that. So I didn't say anything because what was there to say? I wasn't in the mood to challenge someone who made it look like she was wanting a challenge, if you see what I mean.

I wasn't at all more entitled to that space; just a politeness thing. A person with loads of shopping is not any more entitled to a seat on the bus, but I will tend to offer. Politeness, really.

Well No, because nobody else might have come along.

If a smoker was already sat there, and someone sat down with food, then the foodie would have to like it or lump it.

Another person may have come along.

But, with your logic, whoever is there first gets to determine whether the bench is smoking or non-smoking? What happens if all of the benches are already taken up with non smoking lunch eaters? Do smokers then lose their right to sit down and have a smoke on their lunch break? And what about if the smoker wasn't smoking at first, but eating their lunch, and then wanted a cigarette?

Thanks for the explanation Gazing. Can't imagine why anyone chose to sit in that specific spot to have a smoke, when so many other spots were available. Maybe she thought of it as 'her bench', so her nose was a bit put out by you being there! :rotfl:Silly woman.

Some people obviously don't have enough to worry about!

Exactly my thoughts reading through 7 pages. It's not illegal to smoke outdoors, actually it's encouraged that smokers do to cut the risks of passive smoking to non smokers!

I would suggest going indoors and shutting the door for a few mins while the smoke is in the air! To be honest, they'd have to be smoking an awful lot for smoke to linger in the air for any real amount of time.
