One summer evening several years ago, I came back from a trip to the supermarket. Walking home, I did not expect the fire engine that whizzed past me to be parked outside my home.

My rear garden backs onto a wooded area, and a fire had started behind my neighbour's fence and spread to mine. My neighbour blamed kids but we live in a very enclosed spot, and have never had any trouble before or since. The truth of the matter - not that my former neighbour will ever admit it - is that he had a cigarette and threw the stub behind the fence. It hadn't rained for weeks, and the trees were tinder just waiting to be set alight. Muppet.

My former neighbour did that too. He was a very heavy smoker and used to stand at the front of his house smoking and then flick his fag end away. He smoked roll-ups and had the weird notion that they went out as soon as you threw them away.

Same thing happened, his house overlooks a grass bank and large hedge and, as it had been a very hot summer, the whole lot went up.

I swear this next bit is true - he is no longer with us as he died of lung cancer (in his late 50s.)

Sit at the other end off your garden then am sure you wont smell it, or simply win the lottery and put a huge bubble like dome over your entire property then they wont be able to smell your breath either hehe

Smokers should just stop smoking. That would cure a lot of problems!

It wasn't meant to be! It was an honest reaction to someone who was behaving considerately towards their neighbour. If only there were more people like that.

It's strange that so many people are happy to be rude to other posters but a compliment is taken as patronising.

Last summer I removed the window in the second floor next to my neighbours house and placed a fan there. Next to the fan I had a couple of febreeze bottles full of a mixture of vinegar, WD40, mouthwash, Old Spice, Flash, Mr Muscle and a few other things. When they smoked under the window I would spray this. Occasionally you would hear them moan.

My old neighbours used to respect that the wind always blew this way down the house and would smoke on the drive where we would get minimal smoke in our house. We have since had our neighbours house rented out to numerous eastern european families who change every other year except the older couple. We have no business in what they're up to, but the smoking is !!!!ing horrible.

I used to smoke, I used to make sure I smoked nowhere near anyone who didn't. Even when there was no smoking ban, if our private bar had just me who was a smoker I would smoke outside. I'm glad I used to do that, I know why people used to respect me for it, because the smell is !!!!ing horrible to non-smokers.

This summer they have some new eastern europeans in (plus the old couple) and now are smoking under my window again. We can't open our patio doors, our kitchen door or windows, upstairs bedroom windows or upstairs bathroom window without having the house smell like smoke. Even the spraying of random crap isn't working.

Is it illegal to throw waterbombs over the to neighbours gardens?

If it isn't, what about if they're filled with petrol? Please say it's allowed.

Reminds me of a recent incident. It was lovely weather so I bought myself some lunch in town and sat on a secluded bench to eat it. After a few minutes, a woman came and sat beside me - and lit her cigarette.
I was initial furious because it was stinky and I was eating - BUT - it's a free country, she was in her rights, and ultimately it just comes down to rudeness. And some people are rude, and we just have to live with it.

I am a smoker, and I have to say that I would have asked you first if you minded! If I was sat on an empty bench I would just light up, but if you sit on a bench where some-one else is already sitting, smokers should ask first.

I also smoke in my garden, I do look to see if my neighbours windows are open and keep an eye on where the smoke goes, but, I would be a bit peeved if they complained, but it would depend on how they approached it. We are going to put a bit of hard standing at the bottom of the garden and may move my smoking to this area when it is finished!
