Smoking is disgusting, anyone who does it should be ashamed of themselves and talk about chavs - most chavy thing ever I think. OP you have my sympathy our old next door neighbours would do this, smoke in the garden it would go over the fence and through the patio door. The smell is rancid and my kids shouldn't have to breathe anyones smoke EVER. Especially when they are just playing in their own backgarden. But there isn't really anything you can do about it. We also had to put up with the constant coughing at 4am nearly everyday of the old man who couldn't give up the fags and was killing himself. TBH if it wasn't for those neighbours our old house would have been almost perfect, all the other neighbours were lovely and non smokers, they however were a family from hell. So glad we moved and whilst next door do smoke you wouldn't know it so it is possible to be considerate. I regularly tell people in the street they stink if I'm unfortuante enough to walk behind them. Plus it has to be the least MSE thing ever, such a waste.

ditto people that own cats - I've said it before and I'll say it again, anyone who has one should be made to walk the streets picking up their pets crap - also disgusting.

Oh my lord! Do you have any idea how offensive your post is? You know absolutely nothing about my life and yet you have managed to call me a disgusting chav because I smoke and own a cat.

    Am I a chav?

Also - my cat craps in my own garden cheers.

What car do you drive? I'd like to make a sweeping judgement on you based on that one thing please.

Soooooooooooo, bringing this back to the OP.....
We have a student house next door, their contract forbids smoking (I know because I spoke to the lettings agent ;)), they smoke indoors and it seeps into our hall and master bedroom. Absolutely honks. We have asked them nicely three times if they wouldn't mind smoking outside; each time the smell reduces for a time then recurs.

What the hell can we do? *IS* there anything we can do? Someone early in this thread said that they have the right to not smell smoke in their bedroom- that's exactly how I feel. Letting agent says that they can't do anything until the contract is up. One would think that breaking the contract may have some effect...?

I had the same problem with a load of students in the flat above, chain smoking spliffs and ciggies continuously, so that our flat stank, and we constantly had their butts and spliff ends chucked onto our balcony, (amongst other multifarious problems like 4am weekday parties, thumping music 24 hours a day, visitors buzzing communal bell all times of night and day).
I did ask them very very politely a number of times to sort it out, but they got worse in response. In the end i contacted their university, and asked them to "have a word" as the university had a community promise thing, where students had to show consideration and not bring the uni into disrepute with locals. Kept on at the landlord and environmental health as well, and eventually they got kicked out. If they are breaking the terms of their lease, it doesnt matter if they are mid point, they CAN be chucked out if they fail to comply. The landlords generally dont want the hassle of doing it tho' nor losing the rent.

I think "perspective" is the word which is needed here. People steal for all sorts of reasons.

Was more trying to point out stealing through customs. The amount od dodgy fags and booze there is has increased loads recently. especially where i am. Theres a black market for alcohol and fags, i even get my baccy for a fiver. These drugs are 'legal' (dodgy substitues probably are not) and go un noticed day to day. You will always find people are underhand to make a quick buck wether it be fags, alcohol, drugs or even budget airlines. Legalising drugs will not help reduce the problem for sure.

I cant imagine there will ever be a drug free society as people will always try to find a way to relieve the pressures of life or simply people enjoy the buzz. We all have our vices some are more dangerous than others. in my eyes any drug is bad as it affects the mental and or physical health of users and others around but i wouldnt say there is one that is the worst drug or the best drug because they all have the merits and downfalls and it always depends on the user

8for example a friend of mine at university was i'd say a heavy drug user. At weekends he would go through 10-20 pills, alot of speed which would leave him comatosed for a day or two. He also constantly smoked weed, be it morning before lectures and exams. This guy is doing a PHD in astro physics and publishing papers that are ground breaking in his field of science. now i know this guy would never harm a fly or himself (in terms of jumping off a bridge) and as far as i can see his activities are completely harmless to anyone else.

the course might not be astro physics but he defo was doing some form of physics and enjoyed talking about space = 1+1= 8

I think my son is an absolute darling and wish everyone was like him.
We have recently moved house and have quite a small garden. I am a non smoker and unfortunately he smokes (never understood why when he was brought up in a smokeless home).
However, I have always asked him to smoke outside which he has always done.
The other day I came home and he was in the kitchen smoking (door open). After freaking out at him, he explained that when he is outside smoking he has noticed his smoke travels up to next doors bedroom window where their little girls sleeps, so he won't smoke outside anymore.
He also hates smoking indoors as he knows I dislike it, so he has been going and sitting in his car when he wants a cigarette.
I do wish he would quit though. what satisfaction can you get from sitting outside alone in your car just to have a cigarette?

You wouldn't eliminate the illegal side of drug dealing by making them legal. The problem is the government would tax them and therefore there would still be someone offering it cheaper. You have the same situation with alcohol and ciggies now. You only have to look at the amount customs discover to know this is an issue. At the same time there are more drugs in the uk than ever and I really do think it's a war the government will never win.

In context I don't think drugs are a problem but like alcohol there is always room for abuse. You could get someone who could function completely normally while their neighbour could ruin their life. I guess these people would need to be treated in the same way as alcoholics.

I know plenty of people who take hard drugs and are able to hold down important jobs and keep a family without any issues. It is possible.

I've never understood why people smoke. They must get something out of it though otherwise they wouldn't bother so each to their own.

I believe that drugs are a problem in a way which makes alcohol abuse look like a petty issue.

There are a number of reasons why people start but the main reason they continue is addiction. It's a helluva thing to try and stop.
