Neighbours Smoke

Does any body else get fed up with there neighbours ciggie smoke !!!
Our neighbours chain smoke, which is there bussiness but what is driving us mad is in the garden all we can smell and have wafting over us is there smoke and it stinks.
We have put up 6ft fencing have covered them in plants taking care to get as much fragrence in our garden but its the smoke we can smell, the problem has got worse since an extention was put up and the patio area moved closer to ours so it blows in the house as well if i have back door and windows open:mad: we have in the past asked them not to block a shared drive only to be told its his house and he can do what he wants in it, It is his house and what he does is up to them, but why do we have to put up wih there smoke has any one else had this and what did you do ?

We have this problem too. We are lucky enough to get on well with our neighbours, but still haven't found a way of stopping the cigarette smell blowing into our garden-and worse-it seems to drift straight into our bedroom window, which makes the room stink!
We can't really ask them to smoke elsewhere, so just put up with it, unfortunately. I'll be watching this thread though, to see if anyone else has any clever ideas!

What about looking into smokeless ashtrays? I don't know if they work or not, but it might be something to consider.

we do talk to our neighbour, but anything that happens building works, noise early morning with a smile he always says its my house,
We have tried burning garden insence, candles, fences gets higher as we added trellese to the fence. I also dont think smokers realise how much it does smell and how far it carries:mad:

Many things I could say - too polite to do so.

    It drives me crazy!
I live in a flat and my downstairs neighbour smokes in the stairwell. The draught blows it straight up to my flat

It stinks and she often smokes late at night and the smell comes into the bedroom and wakes me up :(

I asked her not to and confirmed with the council (council owned block) that it's illegal as it counts as a public place. They sent round notices 'reminding' people. But still she does it but sometimes ducks inside her flat when she sees my door opening.

Left me with the option of putting up with it or trying to get the council to send a fine which I didn't feel comfortable doing. She's a pensioner and has probably been smoking in the stairwell since long before it was illegal to do so and I'm only here for a couple of years.
I get through a lot of air freshener.

No, smokers never realise how much they stink!!

He is correct in that it is his house but he has to adhere to the laws regarding noise, pollution etc the same as everyone else. Not sure smoke would come under Environmental Protection but may be worth looking into, especially if it's entering your property.

Move? My nearest neighbour is half a mile away. They can smoke salmon for all I care, I won't smell it. On the other hand there is the local farmer and his animals. They are quite smelly. Perhaps I ought to ask him to see if he could keep the smell levels down.

Buy their house, put a restrictive covenant on the property banning smoking, sell it again. (I have seen this done, and after several discussions can't quite get my head around whether this would be legally effective. It did however stop me buying the house the covenant was on.

we had problems with our neighbours and we spoke to the council about it and they did nothing.... as we own and our neighbours own they didn't seem to care...

Water your garden with a powerful sprinkler? :rotfl:('Oops was that too close to the fence?')
