Yes and they hang out of their bedroom window smoking so it they can blow it out of their house and comes straight in our bedroom window which is right next to it (semi detached). In the night of summer we get months of can't sleep because it's too damn hot or can't sleep because the stench makes my gut turn.

And I have no idea what on earth they smoke but it is absolutely revolting.

Ahh, I see why you have a problem now.

Is it rolls up they're smoking or some kind of cigarette?

I smoke but can't stand the smell of roll ups.

    Oh come on...

Comparisons of cars pouring fumes into homes.

Now a BBQ offending a vegetarian? Many people put up with the smell of BBQ's, that don't like it, however BBQ's aren't a regular activity that is done many times a day, is it?

I feel it is still a valid point, but here's a different example you may prefer:

Where I currently live, we can smell everything that our neighbours cook (they live below us), and I don't like the smell of about 80% of what they cook (It stinks!). But hey, they have a right to eat and cook whatever they want! I wouldn't dream of asking them not to cook a particular dish.

And the fumes from cars, vans and buses regularly seep into our flat too, as we live on a busy road. I wish we could just keep our window closed, but being in the top floor, our flat also gets very, very, very hot! Those fumes are a problem 365 days a year (unless it snows! lol), so I don't see why that isn't a fair comparison?

Like I said, I'll be considerate of others whilst out and about, but in my own home, I'm going to relax and enjoy myself.

So now you're accepting that your smoke does go onto their property?

How about smoking down the far end of the garden so that it doesn't affect your neighbours' house?

    I don't smoke.

Do you only expect them to smoke when the wind is favourable for the OP?

It's good to see some smokers are responsible in the way they smoke. What a good neighbour you are, relic!
Only 50% right, I am a non-smoker butr I will defend a smoker's legal right to smoke in his own garden as he so wishes

Those examples are more realistic, although are very personal to you.

I just don't get the point of being considerate, in public, to complete strangers, then when you get home thinking "oh nevermind this is my property i'll do what the hell I want" and not being at all considerate for your neighbours.

Thats funny, my best friend is a non smoker, always has been. But he says he actually likes the smell of rollies. Cant stand the smell of normal fags and when in france i bought some marlboroghs.... he was nearly sick.

In my mse (as good as you can get as a smoker anyway) way i try and do half and half with fags and rollies, dont really like the taste of rollies and if have a couple together (not broken up with normal fags) it makes me gag well bad!

Why do some smokers think it is OK to let their disgusting smoke blow in everyone else's faces!? It is vile. My husband smokes and if he lets his smoke blow anywhere near me or other people, he certainly knows about it because I scream merry hell at him.

We've got neighbours like this too and it's absolutely disgusting. And as for being hard pushed to smell it after a few minutes? You really have trashed your sense of sense of smell with smoking then, it lingers for ages and is vile.

I certainly don't give a monkeys when I use my fire pit though, if they weren't smokers I'd only use it late at night and certainly never when they had laundry out. They don't offer us any courtesy though so in this respect we don't either.
The smell of smoke is vile and lingers for ages and you have a fire pit???? That just doesn't make sense. There is a bit of difference between a cigarette in your own backgarden and a whopping fire when your neighbours washing is out.
We all have things that niggle us about our neighbours. Kids screaming as they are playing, the other side of us mowing their lawn at 8am on a Sunday morning. But that's just life.. I'm sure our neighbours have niggles about us. But we all get on.

The examples are personal to me, but not uncommon considering the number of people who live in flats/apartments in city centres, or other busy areas.

I'm considerate because I am in a public place, and am sharing that space with others, so I feel it's only right to be considerate of them. However, in my own home, in my own space, I shouldn't have to worry about a little smoke affecting someone in a different property to me! I wouldn't dream of going into the shared hallway and smoking though, I have no right to!

If I can't relax in my own home, where can I? Besides, for me personally, I smoke so infrequently, I would any complaint as a bit 'nitpicky' from neighbours.

I am a non smoker and don't much like the smell of cigarette smoke, but some of the views on this thread are just wow!

Smokers aren't allowed to smoke at work, or on a night out. And now, some are saying that they also shouldn't be allowed to smoke in their own homes and gardens because the neighbours can smell it. Given that smoking is not illegal, where exactly are they then supposed to smoke?

Consideration goes both ways, and the anti smokers are showing no consideration at all to their neighbours. How about going inside for 10 minutes if the smell in the garden is bothering you, or moving to another spot in your garden? The fresh air will soon dissipate it. If you are in the main reasonable about the issue, I suspect most neighbours would be amenable to a polite request not to blow smoke through your bedroom window at night. However, if that is one of a list of prohibitions, including not smoking in their garden or downstairs with the windows open, then I'm not in the least surprised you were met with a polite "no way".
