Neighbours Smoke

I'm sorry you are annoyed but there is nothing you can do about this. They are perfectly entitled to use legally obtained tobacco products in their own garden. The smoke and smell cannot be contained and will quickly disperse in the open air.
There are a lot of things that people can do in their own home/garden, which create similar effects. Using a barbeque (smoke and smell), burning garden waste in an incinerator (smoke and smell), cooking with the kitchen window open (smell), keeping "pets" from dogs to chickens (smell), creating a compost heap (smell), lighting candles or outdoor lamps (smoke and smell), painting the fence (smell), revving the car engine (smoke and smell)... and so on.
I'm afraid if you are sensitive to smells, then there will always be something that bothers you outdoors. I do have sympathy though. When I was pregnant, the smell of smoke (any smoke - not just cigarettes) used to make me feel nauseous.0 -
We had a problem with our neighbour (very small terraced houses) who smoked outside his back door - he hadn't noticed that he was standing directly under our baby's window, which we had to keep open to prevent the room overheating. We politely asked him if he could stand the other side of his back door, so the smoke wasn't going straight up through the window. He moved his smoking chair 2 feet, we bought him a bottle of wine, problem solved. I can no longer smell the smoke, and I am a non-smoker who hates the smell.
If they are smoking directly under a window, then being polite and neighbourly about it may solve the problem. If however they are just sitting in their garden, and the offence is being caused by smoke wafting over the fence, then I'm afraid you will either have to put up with it or close your windows.
Just a thought - do you have adjoining chimneys? If you do, the smoke could be drifting through there, which may explain the smell inside your house - if that's a problem and they're not used, then perhaps closing them off somehow might help.0 -
Your comparisons are ridiculous, do people park outside your house every so often, have old decrepid cars that pour fumes through your windows?
Didn't think so.
It's called common decency, if you have neighbours who use their garden, or have windows open, make an effort to smoke away from that area.
No this thread is riddiculous and your belief that i cant do what i want on my own property is also.0 -

I certainly don't give a monkeys when I use my fire pit though, if they weren't smokers I'd only use it late at night and certainly never when they had laundry out. They don't offer us any courtesy though so in this respect we don't either.

Do you have reading comprehension?
I never said you can't do it on your own property, I said have some consideration for others who don't want to smell your smoke.Per Mare Per Terram0 -

If it was purposeful it would be but we are clearing a hugely overgrown garden and often have things to burn but if no courtesy is shown to us then there is no reason to put ourselves out to show them courtesy. Hence whatever's cut and dry gets burnt, less trips to the tip.
If they didn't fill our garden and house with the stench of their smoking then I'd make the effort to have it impact on them less."Life is what you make of it, whoever got anywhere without some passion and ambition?0 -

When I am out and about, I make every effort to avoid my smoke going anywhere near anyone else (on the rare occasions that I do smoke), but I'll be damned if I go to any extra efforts on my own property for a little bit of smoke.
Oh come on...
Comparisons of cars pouring fumes into homes.
Now a BBQ offending a vegetarian? Many people put up with the smell of BBQ's, that don't like it, however BBQ's aren't a regular activity that is done many times a day, is it?Per Mare Per Terram0 -

Do they know it's a problem for you though?
How often are they out there smoking?
Yes and they hang out of their bedroom window smoking so it they can blow it out of their house and comes straight in our bedroom window which is right next to it (semi detached). In the night of summer we get months of can't sleep because it's too damn hot or can't sleep because the stench makes my gut turn.
And I have no idea what on earth they smoke but it is absolutely revolting."Life is what you make of it, whoever got anywhere without some passion and ambition?0 -

Oh and for how often, all the time, chain smokers and bad sleepers so at random times through the night too and it is strong enough to wake you up."Life is what you make of it, whoever got anywhere without some passion and ambition?0
