you'll do it. takes time but Lidl is my 1st stop now.

No baskets but plenty of cardboard lid boxes. That'll do me fine.

  • Lidl charge for carrier bags, take them with you. Don't know Aldi's or Nettos policy on this.

No Netto here I'm afraid  I've never tried them - are they ok?
I think it's like any supermarket - it depends what you're buying. They are very good for biscuits, cheap olive oil, pasta, passata (however you spell it?!), some frozen food and I recently discovered their tinned tropical fruit cocktail which is lovely.
I don't have Aldi/Lidl so I can't compare but certainly Netto is worth a try if you come across one. The prices are a lot lower than 'posher' supermarkets but you have to pay for carriers (or bring your own).
If you search MSE for Netto, there is a thread somewhere with recommended Netto lines.
Happy shopping if you find one - don't forget the olive oil :-)

Only thing I didn't understand was that they don't have shopping baskets???

I hope to wean myself off the other supermarkets but it's sooooo hard!!!
Our local Netto didn't have baskets for a while because the baskets kept 'walking' and replacing them would have added to their overheads. It's also the only place locally where you need £1 for the trolley.

all the recommendations are really helpful. looking to get more of my shopping from Lidls this week. I think the biggest saving we can make is on food shopping as we bought most of it from tescos before. And i'm going have to try some stollen:j

I picked up a supermarket type basket at an exhibition a few years ago - free of charge - and I take this to LIDL/ALDI - saves time both in shopping and at home. :j :j

Netto's do charge for carrier bags, I think its 9p for a larger bag.
Its been a while since I brought their bags tho, I also use boxes from their store which are left lying around in the aisle's.
People also give me carrier bags and I keep a stack in the boot of my car.
I purchased a keyring, shape of a £1, so its there on my set of car keys, if I ever go shopping, I dont have to fumble around for a £1 coin.

  • we started going to lidl and aldi for their weekly specials (you can get some fab stuff). i used to think they were 'cheap' shops mainly due to their locations. it was my dad who put us on to them due to some brilliant stuff he had got in their specials. now we go to aldi once or twice a week as is quite local and only go to lidl occasionally when their specials are good as they are quite far away from us. you can sign up to both stores emails which tell you what their specials are.
