I have been a member of MSE for a year and have discovered the hidden gems in Lidl and Aldi. We don't have a Netto up here.

We have also been doing supermarket comparison shopping, too and taking advantage of deals on items we normally buy, which gives us leftover for treats or eating out MSE style, with coupons or eating less.

I agree about morrisons now, i use to shop there, and i thought my shopping bill was cheap until i came on here, i will not shop at morrisons again, might have something to do with not giving me a job lol
I preferred it when it was Safeway too

I go there occasionally, I do look in all the supermarkets as I get bored with just the one.

    I don't live near a Lidl - and I really miss it!

Ya know what's REALLY good? Their tinned beef curry (approx £1). I used to stock up on them (back when I live near one) and it was my staple emergency meal. Cook some rice, crack open a tin and microwaved it and that was dinner! Awesome.

We were confirmed 'Tesco-holics' a year ago and our average weekly shop was well in excess of £100.00
Now we shop selectively between LIDL, ALDI, Tesco and ASDA - our average weekly spend is down to around £45 (under £25 last week).
Because we are more selective, the quality of food that we eat has actually improved - LIDL and ALDI are great for the more 'continental' type of products, which, in the 'mainstream' supermarkets, are normally sold at a premium.
I can remember, a couple of years ago, we used to joke about LIDL and ALDI - Not any more - I am big enough to admit that I was totally wrong.
The only downside is that, last week, when I received my last 'Clubcard' statement, there were insufficient points to award me any vouchers this quarter. I can live with that.

Rog2 you are the same as us. We always thought Lidl was a bit !!!!!! and were also Tescoholics. Now we shop selectively but throw Iceland into the mix. We eat better and spend loads less money.

Tesco's huge advertising budget has convinced all of us that they are the cheapest but compared to Lidl (and Iceland somewhat) they seem really pricey. Tesco's advantage of running a few loss-leaders every week to get us in there obviously works but as they say 'don't believe the hype'.

The one thing you need to do in Lidl is take your time - they have loads of goods that you just don't notice if you wander round aimlessly. you will be amazed at what you can find. We bought 40 sacks of garden wood chippings at less than half price of our local garden centre !!

Our one piece of advice regarding Lidl would be 'buy one and try one'. You may not like all the goods but you will be impressed by the large majority. For instance my other half hates their washing powder but loves their dishwasher tablets !!

The bonus with Lidl is, in my opinion, the goods are far better quality than Tesco and cost less !! And to add to those who have mentioned it their Stollen is just wonderful. We keep having to replace the one we buy for Christmas !!

Have you tried Brioche yet ??
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

    Hi guys,

I have tried Lidl and found them to be ok for everything except breakfast cereal - however have not tried them now for a couple of years for this - can anyone advise what may be good?

Still Mr T slave at the mo as I don't want to go to too many stores as I will def spend more - I would prefer to do it all in one go.

Try the Fruit 'n' Fibre - am eating it at this precise moment !!! Delish !!

Me & oh did it for 3 months, then we upped the budget to 25 a week for 2.

    It can definately be done!

  • On lidl's specials this week that had some lovely mens boxers. I did notice though that they didnt have a fly hole. So if your passing a gents toliet and you see a bloke standing there with his trousers down going for a wee. You could stop and ask him how much his weekly lidl shop is:rotfl:
  • Went to lidl this morning.

Got a microwave and integral grill, 6 bottles of wine, 2 small bottles of wine, 2 loaves of bread, a pair of binoculars, a brolly, 15 eggs, lots of cooked meat, milk, bread flour, sr flour, marg, bacon, cereal bars, lots of creals (thank you guys for the advice), tin toms, toothbrushes and instant coffee. It all came to £97.21.

Not at all bad. Something odd on my receipt is leaflet 0.01 x 249 + £2.49 need to ask them about that!

    Thanks for all the advice.
