What job do you do Person_one? I find it difficult to understand how you can criticise someone who works to support their family, irrespective of what the job is (as long as it is legal)?

What? Having a job is enough to make a person immune to any criticism?

    My job doesn't involve deception.

If you won't even admit to what your job is, you have absolutely no right to criticise merlin68. Maybe they have a different view of tarot reading to you? Have they committed a criminal offence?
    Gone ... or have I?

It should be against the law.

What does my job have to do with the fact that 'merlin68' is employed to lie to people?

Were does it say that bday presents are an essential part of life. I'm not christian therefore I don't celebrate by wasting money on tat, just to makethe shops rich. My kids get stuff when they need it or I spot a bargain.

I'm a pagan, but my kids get presents on their birthdays. It's a celebration of their births. They don't get loads spent on them (budget is £30) and the presents are usually something that they'd like but can't afford.

I certainly don't have money to waste on *stuff* just for the sake of some consumerist ideology.

Even a tiny token or a card with a heartfelt message is better than nothing. Do you really want to say to your child "The day you came into the world and my life was just another day, no recognition necessary." Every other child will (hopefully) be made to feel just a little bit extra special on their birthday, except yours. They'll notice.

If you think the only way to make a child feel special on their birthday is to buy them a present or a card, you lack imagination.

What do you do then instead of a present?

Seriously? You can't think of anything to do other than buy someone something? A day out somewhere, a trip to a special place, a nice meal etc etc

There was a music shop near where we lived when I was younger that had a board in its window. Every day was a musical person's birthday e.g. "Chopin is 200 today", marked on the board with drawings etc. Always famous people.

On my 18th, my mother arranged for my name to be on there. Free and priceless - made me grin from ear to ear.

Merlin68 was clearly talking about paying money for things hence:

"I don't celebrate by wasting money on tat, just to make the shops rich"
