how much do you need the money... is it for a specific cause that is worth parting with your precious's? how much do you need the space, as someone who has moved numerous times, those heavy loft contents are much heavier when u have no movers and it's down to you to lug.. u then wish you'd tossed half the rubbish

    Not desperately now.

Definitely need to free up space though, the thought of having to take shedloads of stuff with me isn't very appealing, even for a hardened hoarder like me.

I think I've worked out what my biggest issue about this is........it's because a large percentage of my stuff isn't actually junk, it's all good quality things and I know I'm going to have to let it go for peanuts.

Even simple things like my daughter's old books tend to be 'sets' in slipcases etc and they are still in good condition.

I need to get my head round the fact that things are what they are and maybe this will be a lesson in just how draining (both financially and emotionally) it is to have so much stuff. :o

Nothing much I can do about losing out financially this time round, just have to accept it and make sure there's no next time round.

As soon as you buy something and take it out of its wrapping, its used and worth almost nothing compared to what you paid for it.

you could ebay the nicer bits individually? When I do a clear-out I ebay most of it at first, if it doesn't sell then I take it to the charity shop/toys and books to school etc.

Who we are is NOT what we have... our life is measured by those who love us, not the 'things' we love.

I wish I had that mindset. Life would be so much easier and cheaper although TBF I have never been dumped by a pair of shoes, a lovely handbag or a dior lipgloss :p

Just out of curiosity on my part, have you always had that outlook or did you have an epiphany at some point? (I am hoping you haven't always had it coz that means theres hope for me yet).

I was suggesting that's what the book was saying, but I do share those sentiments - yes, I do like THINGS ( and I previously posted that I used to hoard books but ended up realising other people could have the pleasure of them too, since I'd finished the books and wouldn't read most of them again)

I'm clearing out a chest of drawers today that's in a cupboard, it's full of old things that need to go in the bin - but I will keep some of it, as 1/ I'm not moving house, 2/ I wouldn't replace the "things" with new versions so I don't need the space and they 3/ are also not worth any money.

If I was to move house even more would be consigned to the bin, without hesitation though. I found the jeans I was wearing the second time I saw my husband - he's still here but the butt that fitted in those jeans isn't - I'd be lucky to get them past my knees now:rotfl:

That was my intention when I first started out. I very quickly got a bit down about it all again then started with the 'might want to keep this that or the other' thoughts.

I've kinda joked my way through this thread but to be serious for a minute, I do feel like I'm giving up my life, my home, my routine, my kids' lives, my garden (which sounds really daft but it was becoming the only enjoyable hobby I've ever had for me, in many many years, and loads of other things that make me feel 'safe'.

When I get to sorting out things of mine that I love, it's hard not to feel as if there will be nothing of me left. :o

Oh and the clothes thing would take me all of 5 minutes....I dont have many. :o

This is very how I felt, and each thing I threw away felt like a little bit of me and it got really hard. One day, I sat down and worked out who I am, now, not me 20 years ago when I collected some of the crap, but who am I now - and who do I want to be. Then I worked out what things from me now, I wanted to take forward. The difference has been amazing and I have thrown so much out it's shocked the OH. I feel so much better for it and now have space for the stuff I want to keep so that I can see it, or use it.

It's not an easy journey, but it can be fun!

I've got DS1 and 4 'mates' coming tomorrow night, not a lot has happened yet ... but he says I'm not to fuss, so I'm not.
From DS3's room, we evicted a carrier bag full of empties (tins), 2 glass bottles (wine?) and 2 plastic bottles (coke / squash). Oh, and another carrier bag of empty deodorant aerosols.  There is a motley collection of odd socks and t-shirts floating around his bed, and various health hazards we didn't delve too far into.

In DS2's room, I can see a pile of Kleenex boxes. The top one has tissues in: I suspect the ones under it are empties which he doesn't like to throw away.

It's a good job DS1's mates are all young lads. And I've checked, and none of them are allergic to dust. :rotfl:
