An awful situation to be in- now you know that that may be why but I can totally understand being completely stressed out when your entire life savings dissapear - would be too.
Hopefully the situation will be quickly resolved.
It just seems crazy that in this day and age things like this happen - you'd think they would have a better way to investigate things than by rinsing someone's account.
Let us know how you get on - it sounds like your money will be returned to you shortly and perhaps make the bank know that you are worried about your direct debits/standing orders that are due to go out.

I had similar problems with santander. Had a cheque from my mother in law for £10,000 to pay of credit cards. Santander froze my account which had £700 of my own money in it. Five direct debits bounced and i had no cash. Even after clearing me of any wrong doing after conversations with my mothre in law and her bank, they still could not unfreeze my account until five days. Their answer to me getting access to money was to open another account with them with a £500 overdraft limit. They did try and charge me £125 for unpaid direct debits but did see sense in the end and reversed the charges.

I can sympthase with the OP. It is a very stressful situation to be in.

did they empty your account and did they let you know they were going to do it ?

I know it doesn't help but the font line staff, you have been talking to, would probably be disciplined, if they had opened up, like some people here have.

Don't be too hard on them.

I am sure all posters here want to see this resolved quickly in your favour, as I am sure it will be, from what you have told us.

    • Up to 3 months prison time
    • A fine of up to £5000
    • Or a combination of the above.

My reading is that they "froze" her(?) account including £700 of her own money. They then "bounced" all payments until the separate account was set up to take over.

The effect of freezing the account would be the same as removing the money, as they have done with you. Just their way of doing things.

When banks freeze accounts it would be unusaul for them to warn anybody as it is more than likley we would empty the account.

They didnt inform me. I found out when i tried to withdraw cash and it said i had insufficent funds. When i printed out a mini statement it said balance £700 available balance -£9,300.

When i rang the bank they told me that there had been suspicous activity on my account and they had frozen it and could not unfreeze it for five days.

3 months - no two years actually! But no prosecutions have ever been brought for tipping off.

Why do Barclays alone do this? Other banks clearly interpret the laws in a different way. RBS/Natwest would simply not allow withdrawal of the cheque proceeds for the full clearing cycle.
