oh my god i cant believe what im reading. I am just an ordinary person who has held a bank account with barclays for the last fifteen years AND I HAVE NO OTHER BANK ACCOUNTS WITH ANYONE ELSE its just a basic cash card account no cheque book , credit card or overdraught facility and its the only bank account i hold. I have never borrowed a penny from barclays in my life this account is used daily to pay direct debits car insuance and my mobile phone and two small limit credit cards which i use to pay off balances , and for every day shopping purposes ie. food petrol etc. I recenty decided to buy a car so i asked a member of my family to loan me £7000 he said he would be able to give it me he gave me two seperate halifax bankers drafts from his account i put them into my bank account they cleared five days later , i was just going to pay off a few hundred pounds of my credit cards and buy a car for about £3k most car dealers accept debit cards and leave the reat in for my direct debits nd money to live off , NOW HOW THE HELL DOES AS YOU SAY "SOMETHING DOESSNOT SEEM RIGHT " whats so bloody bad about that that they have to take all my money out of my accouint wthout notice and leave me penniless its completely outrageous .
No-one is saying that you have done anything wrong at all. It's just Barclays taking precautions because of the amounts, they're just following their procedures. The debate on here is mainly about how some people think Barclays have done something wrong and some don't. I appreciate it's a massive problem for you but please try not to worry about it, it will soon be sorted out. I'm sure that once it's resolved,if you make a formal complaint to Barclays about the situation they've left you in, they'll look at it favourably. If you have payments leaving in the next few days, call Barclays to discuss it with them, they can allow the payments to go through.0 -
its not as though it was cash put through my account it wass bankers draft from HALIFAX a major british building society, bankers drafts are meant to be safe and guaranteed , the drafts cleared the five day banking sytem so whats the concern!!!!!0

And exactly what is the point?
The possibilities are:
Barclays were right to do what they did because of money laundering/bouncing cheques/offset against other debts/some other reason. In none of these instances do they need to tell the customer in advance and in some of them they can't.
Barclays have made a mistake
Barclays have stolen the money permanently
Those are in descending order of probability - I'd wildly guess 70/30/0 percent
Actually there's another possibiity - Halifax have bounced the cheques.
And no I'm not saying it's OK to borrow a car - but it is not necessarily THEFT to do so.
And I don't work for Barclays - or any other bank
You are missing the point, because the point is that there is no reason to remove the money from the account for the best part of a week. This has happened to many people, not just the OP.
Do you know what TWOC stands for??? Taking without owners concent. If a car theif takes a car without concent, then gets caught, they can't turn around and say that I only borrowed it, and was going to take it back.
And just the same, Barclays have no right to take your money. If it was to pay debts within the Barclays group, then they would have to tell you.
I would advise anyone who can't afford to go a week without any money to change to another bank. And anyone who has had this happen to them, to contact the financial services ombudsman.0 -
When you say that LloydsTsb call you "on the pretence" that they want to talk to you about a savings account, that is exactly why they are calling you, to ask you what your plans are for the money you have paid in. Not because they think you might be money laundering.
Under suspicions of money laundering, they aren't allowed to call you at all, or to make any contact with the customer, to discuss anything. That will be why the OP wasn't aware of the money being taken from his account and had to call Barclays and why they wouldn't tell him anything.
You can't possibly make the comment that "only Barclays " do this. Please tell us how you know this ? Please re read the posts, it's a simple scenario that will be resolved for the OP as long as all is well with the money. If not, then the OP is in BIG trouble.
I really hope it happens to you, then you may take a different view.0 -

You're missing the point. Barclays DO have the right to do what they've done. The FOS won't be interested. Changing banks won't make any difference at all, they're all bound by the same legal regulations.0 -

This is exactly why you are missing the point. If Barclays cared about their customers then they would carry out any investigation immediately, in order to not cause distress to their customers.0 -

If it ever did happen to me, my view would be that the bank is attempting to protect me against the possibility of me being innocently involved in a very serious crime. Not your extreme and cynical view that the bank is out to get me !0 -

I KNOW THEY HAVE THE RIGHT, BUT THEY ARE DOING IT THE WRONG WAY, THAT CAUSES DISTRESS TO THEIR CUSTOMERS........can you read and understand this???????0 -

Well you obviously love Barclays for some strange reason. And you will be quite happy to be completely pennyless for a week will you? Or are you sitting there quite smug, thinking that you have other bank accounts to use.......well bad news, because they can freeze them all at once.0
