Then I apologise, as I obviously read it wrong:o However the rest of my post stands. If anyone wants to claim JSA, then they have to be available for work anytime, otherwise everyone would be putting on "restrictions"! Allen had a good suggestion, nip over to the DFW board, put up a SOA (statement of affairs) and there are many good people there who can help cut down on expenditure. It's amazing what you can save with a bit of thought and juggling around
thats a bit simplistic
eg I cant really work when my OH is at work without it impacting heavily on us in further chilcare costs(her shifts are varable)
however a 7 hour window is too narrow
I would be available for approximately a 15 hour window(with some tweaking)0 -
I see what you're saying custardy, but if everyone worked like that, there would be chaos! Obviously those with kids want to minimise the impact, be it financial or childcare, but if they all started doing that, then everyone with kids would be picking their own hours to work!0

But there are jobs available after 5pm. well TBH most parents already do that
its just that they manage to fit it in one way or another
whether its paid childcare or family/friends
less a case of picking hours and more a case of fitting in when they can.

jobs are scarce
we dont work the hours we do through choice,its what makes it work for us
we arent rolling in it,we probably make sub £40k per annu between us
My OH's last job had better hours and meant we were both off in the evenings and I had a social life,well meeting up for regular training sessions.

And this "kid" will be paying for the future benefits and heathcare of anyone old enough to have an opinion on this forum.
Children are future tax payers, It is not good enough to say "you chose to have kids" Children are vital to the continuation of the species, If only the well off had them there would not be enough of them.
I can never understand why the above is often rolled out as the reason some parents should be paid welfare. Some peoples "kids" will be the next lot of thieves, thugs, old lady bashers, murderers and I doubt that the majority of these will come from "well off" families.RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

technically then from what the advisor is saying your not entitled to JSA if you only want a job thats not in normal working hours then we could refuse to take a job or refuse to apply for it if its not in normal working hours!0

Ive been reading this with interest.
Im a SAHM since having my 2nd child.
The first year we managed fine as we got alot of tax credits from my oh being unemployed the year before. Since april though tax credits have been cut so we are struggling so i have been looking for work but it is quite hard as we have 1 car which my oh uses so transport is an issue aswel as who to look after the kids so i have been looking for night jobs.
I did enquire once upon a time about JSA as my brother works in the claim department. Yes i could claim JSA being available for work 24/7 however i wouldnt recieve any money due to my partners income (and he is only nmw) so i didnt see the point in having to travel to the jobcentre every 2 weeks to sign on and then have to turn jobs down because i didnt have childcare and then get told off for not taking jobs!!
I can see why you would want to appeal and i think it would be good to try as you never know but i dont think it could be successfull coz then you would open the floodgates for loads of people like me which is not fair i do not think.
Hope you can find some solutionMum of 2 Under 5s

There are always places where extended hours are worked. But what the DM will be looking at is whether there are any vacancies being advertised with these hours at present in the OP's location, ie what are her chances of finding work. The DM has to be satisfied that the OP will have a good chance of finding a job with her restricted hours.
Just because there are places which are open long hours does not necessarily mean there are jobs available. People are clinging on to their jobs at present so not as much job changing as there used to be.
Let's face it, we are in a recession, pubs, wine bars, etc are closing all the time. Many employers are cutting hours, not taking on extra staff. By restricting her hours like this the OP may be limiting her chances of finding work.
Totally agree with Custardy, most parents have to work around their jobs and most working parents have to use childcare of some sort, be it friends, family or childminder. OP needs to be realistic.0 -

I used to work for both the DWP and the Benefits Agency, and there is a certain amount of discretion allowed by the decision maker!
