I have a very flexible job, I am a care worker And I picked evenings, Mon + Tue I work 3.45-10pm Wed off, Thur + Fri I work 5-10pm, And I work alternative weekends. I have just given them notice of hours changing, As soon as my youngest starts full day school I am available during school hours, Plus I will do 2 evenings a week. Pay ain't that good, Fuel allowance is to be laughed at, But I love my job, And I love the flexibility, And I know all care companies are always looking. Especially for workers who can work evenings and weekends..

Also Check our Arise (google them) Work from home. :-)

I used to work for both the DWP and the Benefits Agency, and there is a certain amount of discretion allowed by the decision maker! Some of those people are complete jobsworths I can tell you, and they really believe it is 'their money'!

Technically speaking it is their money, and your money and my money. It is the taxpayers money. But that has nothing to do with this.

There has to be restrictions on benefits otherwise, as other posters have stated, everyone would be claiming for everything.

Government has set out guidelines and DWP staff are administering them. What do you suggest? Should we throw out the guidelines and just give everyone benefit whether they are available for work or not?

gojojo, what is your professional background? 25 jobs is quite a lot, could it be that you didn't get a job offer because you are over qualified or have no experience at all of the jobs you are applying for? If you are a chartered accountant, who has worked before on maternity in an office for years, you will struggle to get a job stacking boxes in a supermarket or helping in a people's home, which are the jobs mainly available after 5pm. It would make sense in this case for the Jobcentre to consider you are limiting your chance of gaining employment by requesting these set hours.

    Hi there
Im in a similar situation although I did get made redundant from my job whilst on mat leave.
It must vary from job centre to job centre as I was really worried about how they would treat me with having to fit child care around a job etc but they have been brilliant with me so far.
My agreement is I am looking for approx 21 hours a week over three days due to childcare and I have spoken to them about the money I need to make it worthwhile circa 9ph and they said they have a calculator which works out wheather is feasable for me to take the job or not. Ie a minimum wage job, even full time, after paying for petrol, childcare etc I would worse of than on jobseekers! And no we are not entitled to any help with any benefits at all!
Stick at it, Its so hard getting people to understand sometimes.

You should have said that originally instead of making us all wonder why on earth a Christian wouldn't work in a coffee shop or pub for that matter. I presume you don't drink anything with caffeine such as hot chocolate or cola.

Wouldn't you have to be available for 40 hours a week to get any JSA? Or can you get a pro-rata payment if you qualify in all the other ways but are only wanting to work part time hours?

I hate to say it but 25 jobs in 3 months, say 12 weeks is not alot at all. That is just over two a week which if i am not mistaken is below the minimum requirement. If it were two and a half months say ten weeks that is still under the minimum requirement which is three a week. If you look at it that way they could be well within their right to think that the OP is restricting her chances of finding a job.

I don't drink cola, but thats as much because I can't stand the stuff, or the company. There's no 'rules' directly against chocolate (hot or no) or cola (or dr pepper etc.), its primarily the caffeine content we object to as the dependence on its effects can have really damaging effects on people both physically and in terms of the addiction...

Im not actually getting any money at the moment but thats another story but they didnt mention it would be pro rata once sorted out. They said as I was looking for over 16 hours a week then thats fine.
I do belive they do actually make allowances for people with young children. They also put in my agreement I require a weeks notice to start work rather than immediatly available due to childcare.
