Paypal Account closed as deemed too high risk

After using paypal for 5 years I received an email from an ebay buyer (£20 sale) to say they could not pay me for some goods as paypal payment would not go through. On checking my emails/paypal account I found it had been limited. They wanted me to connect a bank account with it, give proof of address and business details. I rang them up saying not a business and so this was marked as completed, the proof of address was also marked as completed and then I put in the 2 amounts that were sent to my bank account to complete that part. I also noticed they had set up direct debit details with my bank. Within a couple of hours of putting in my bank amounts I received an email to say my account had been closed, which has also closed my 5 year old ebay account (which I assume is because I can no longer take paypal.)
I telephoned them this morning and the reason is it has been deemed too high risk. They have said they will look into why it is deemed high risk as the person I spoke to could see no reason..
I have had a paypal top up card for 2 years and have received an email saying I will be getting the new paypal access card, which obv will be no good if I do not have a paypal account. I mainly sell at christmas time on ebay and a few bits every month. I haven't done any transactions for a few weeks until now and cannot understand why they limited my account never mind closed it.
On googling this I cannot find any answers why this has suddenly happened just lots of people it has happened to and wondered if any other people have had the same experience and what I can do if they still want to close my account after looking into it again? Thanks

Have you been selling high risk items? Have you had a large number of claims opened against you or have you opened a lot against Sellers/buyers?'The More I know about people the Better I like my Dog'

No high risk items, the last thing I sold was proper manufacturers coupons I got from the Good food show. I don't sell many coupons, mainly other little bits and pieces, always new. My feedback is over 400 and I have only one neg which was christmas time for a damaged box which I never had chance to refund or replace, they just neg me. I have never had any warnings or complaints from ebay. I have not had any disputes opened against me that I can remember (in the last year at least). The only dispute via paypal I have had was against Thorntons chocolates for some not received as advertised at christmas which I received a full paypal refund with no response from thorntons.
Thanks for your reply. As you may imagine I am very angry about this and am trying to find some answers.Be thankful for what you have because it could all be taken away tomorrow.;)

Might be worth phoning paypal again and seeing if you get to speak to someone else.
This closure is usually as a result of either being connected to a different seller who is a problem, the name or the address can do that, or because your address verification did not pan out well.
It is not usual for an ebay account to go as well, the fact that you cannot take paypal merely means that you cannot list anything, not that you lose the account. There has to be something lurking to do with your address, have you done a credit search to see if anything untoward shows?

I assumed my address verification panned out as it was ticked as completed, it was the bank one which took longer because of the bank holiday. I am sure no one else has had access to my paypal account. By doing a credit search do you mean an experian/other ref agency search?
Who I spoke to at paypal accounts said they would get in touch straight away with the person who closed my account/saw it as high risk and they would email or tel me. I thought I would give them today and then call again tom if not heard anything.
Thanks for advice.Be thankful for what you have because it could all be taken away tomorrow.;)

I have just received this email 26 mins ago. I love the way they send stuff like this when they are closed and you cannot ring them.
Dear xxxx
To protect all members of our online community, we must part ways with you.
We've reviewed your PayPal account and determined there is excessive risk
involved in doing business with you. To minimize the disruption to your
business, you can continue to log in to your account for the next 180 days.
If you have a negative balance, please add money to your PayPal account. If
you choose not to add money and bring your balance to at least zero, we
reserve the right to collect the money through legal means.
Please go to the Resolution Center to resolve any outstanding buyer
complaints or chargebacks. If you would like to refund any of your buyers,
reply to this email with the transaction details. We'll send a refund on
your behalf using money from your PayPal balance.
Here's how to view the status of a buyer complaint:
1. Go to www.paypal.com and log in to your account.
2. Click 'Resolution Centre' near the top of the page.
3. Select 'Open Cases' from the drop-down list next to 'View.'
4. Click 'Status' next to the transaction.
After 180 days, we'll contact you with information on how to withdraw any
money in your PayPal account. You'll be able to transfer money to your bank
account or request a check. You can't withdraw it now because we want to
make sure that you have money in your account to cover any new payment
reversals.
If you'd like more information about our policies, please read our User
Agreement. Click 'Legal Agreements' at the bottom of any PayPal page, and
then click 'User Agreement for PayPal Service.'
Sincerely,

PayPal, an eBay Company
None of this still makes any sense as this has all come out of the blue. My last paypal transaction was a purchase I made on ebay for £57 3 weeks ago with no problems, half came out of my paypal balance and the rest off my credit card.
I am so frustrated over this and do not know who I can complain to. For no reason or none that they will tell me I am unable to sell on ebay after many years of no problems.Be thankful for what you have because it could all be taken away tomorrow.;)

Always knew you were a wrong en
Why does nothing this company do ever surprise me. I knew you would lose your appeal - they don't listen to anyone.
As you know, paypal cherry picked their BEST customers to trial the access card - yet just weeks later your a risk.
A seller i bought from last week had all his sales cancelled - Ebay said he was manipulating feedback by selling low cost items. Yet they encourage sellers to start at 99p. He had 100% feedback of over 100 and DSR's of 4.9/5.0. Ebay did not like this. Nuts.
They won't tell him what he did wrong, so he cannot put it right - so he has to leave Ebay OR increase his prices. He didn't do what some do and have a low price and high postage - all his items had free postage. He's gutted. Thankfully - he still sent my item, although all record of the sale disappeared from my items won on Ebay.
I hope this company gets whats coming to it - someone please set up a rival. I heard your fave Supermarket was thinking about it - wouldn't that be great - even more CC points :rotfl:0 -
Most cases I've come across where sellers complain about their accounts being limited/suspended involve some kind of performance/compliance issue. Or like Soolin said they account was connected to someone else's, who had these issues.
When you come across those few cases where the seller is genuinely 'innocent' is a bit scary.. thinking that your PP account could just vanish is worrying
maybe someone hacking your IP address? can't think of anything else, if it wasn't someone in your household.0 -

I wouldn't mind being a wrong un if I knew what I had done to be one;)
Can't see how anyone can compete with paypal really when they have ebay all stitched up. No paypal account no selling on ebay. As much as I hate the high fees they charge stuff does sell on there. I also have a couple of quid ebay plus points that I have now lost due to all the above.
As said would just love someone to tell me why this has all happened. Think it is the not knowing why which is driving me even more nuts
Thanks for your help/advice anyways pal:p Check yer emails as have forwarded a copy of the email as requested.Be thankful for what you have because it could all be taken away tomorrow.;)

There is no one else in my household. The problem is that I do not know why they have suddenly deemed me an excessive risk and why they have closed my account. No on will tell me so I cannot reply to any probs there may be.
Yes I agree it is scary and I am just glad it hasn;t happened at christmas time when I do most of my selling and have a fair bit in my paypal account. Luckily I had just bought something so my account was empty.Be thankful for what you have because it could all be taken away tomorrow.;)

If only that were true, but there are many more horror stories at paypalsucks.com and paypalwarning.com.0
