Non-Halal kebab meat

Hi folks,
I was debating whether to post this thread here or in the Green & Ethical MS thread, but decided here because I'm sure you're all much better cooks
Basically I absolutely love my kebabs and have one every weekend but I'm very worried that Halal meat in them really goes against my principals on cruelty to animals. So a few weeks ago I decided to give up kebabs pending a more ethical solution.
Unfortunately, I have yet to find one and I have no idea how to go about trying to create kebab-type meat that I can use in my own kebabs. It would be nice to be able to whip one up as close as possible to take-out style kebabs and shove it in the fridge until I get home, so I can microwave it straight away to reheat it.
How do I go about creating the type of meat that you find in kebabs? It's quite flat and stringy, rather moist and not cooked so it's overly done. I'm not even sure which meats to look at to start this, let alone how to prepare and then cook them to emulate how a kebab house does.
Any and all help, suggestions and ideas most appreciated.
Amos

become vegetarian?
Exactly how is halal slaughter worse than stunning (which doesn't always work and does cause pain) and then a bolt in the head?
The "meat" that tends to be used in kebabs in the UK is !!!!!!. Abroad they have kebabs that tend to taste like meat and they have regulations about what exactly can be put in a kebab e.g. germany. I lived in Germany for a while and when i came back to this country i couldn't stomach kebabs anymore as they were so obviously full of !!!!!!.
Sorry to not be able to really able to answer your question.0 -

Yes but i was refering to the practicalities of killing the animal for meat.
Personally i think there are 2 broad positions you either (a) you think all slaughter of animals is cruel so you become a veggie or (b) you eat meat. then you just have to argue about the subtleties of the slaughter. Personally I am on the side of halal slaughter. Slaughter is slaughter and it is only degrees of difference. To argue that halal slaughter is sooo much worse than the conventional method i think is nto the real arguement.0 -

The OP asked for a recipe, not an argument about his ethics.
Have a look around for Kofte, Kobeda or Seekh kebab recipes. I think they're all fairly similar, they're just from different places.
You'd be hard pushed to make Doner meat at home.
This one looks pretty good: Clicky!0 -

Halal slaughter is much worse than stunning an animal because its throat is slit and it's left to bleed to death whilst it's conscious. Sometimes this can take up to four hours. Stunning an aminal renders it unconscious so it does not die an excruciating death when it is slaughtered.
I am surprised Halal and Kosher meat is even legal in the UK in this day and age. Whilst you are correct that a stun bolt doesn't always work first time (in extremely rare occasions), an animal will quickly be stunned again until it does and will never have its throat slit open and left to die whilst it is still alive and aware of what's happening.0 -
...I would also like to add that unbeknownst to most parents, lots of schools now serve only Halal meat in their kitchens.

amosworks wrote:No vegetarianism for humans in unnatural. We are carnivores who turned omnivores - doesn't mean we should stop eating meat.
I've never understood the 'natural vs unnatural' justification of any diet. One could argue that eating cooked food is unnatural, or that eating insects as part of ones daily diet is natural. As for the 'should' in your sentence - it depends on the values, and sometimes the religion, you live by (many religions dictate an 'absolute' morality). You can't apply your own personal moral 'shoulds' to everyone else.
I've seen flavourings for kebabs in asian shops - you mix them with the meat (I think they can also be used with chana dhal and things like that) and they give cooking instructions on the back of the box. I'm not sure if you could use it to replicate doner meat though. I did some reading on it once - I seem to remember there's a specific type of fat that is rubbed into the meat that gives it much of the taste and texture.Sealed Pot Challenge 5 - #1742 :j0 -
Hi everyone
This thread seems to have moved on more towards a discussion of ethics so I'm going to move it across to the Green board.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. lol thanks, I was torn 50/50 where to post it between here and there. Ideally though it's more a discussion on how I can get my weekend kebab fix
I guess theology just comes in to it somehow. As it does everything when you care too much about trying to be a good person I guess
