) and whilst not fully on the subject and openly acknowledging the bias that comes with it - the ecologist having its very obvious agenda - I was reminded of this article whilst reading the thread. intensive farming (and the slaughter that goes with it) is key imo if one is concerned about animal welfare (as the OP claims to be) and is why I rarely eat anything other than organic meat (free range is not necessarily a guarantee that chickens have actually gone outside just that they have access to the outside... a subtle but important difference) and I try to buy local or from farms I know have a good reputation. That said I also buy organic veg and that's not because of concern for the welfare of vegetables
