There goes any sense of credibility which Amos ever had. Now I understand where this persons agenda is driven from, I no longer need bang my head against the wall for their stubborn-minded refusal to accept the facts.

    Hello to all,
to be honest i'm a little shocked at all the crazy talk that's going on here. Sounds like alot of you have read a few articles and got alot of the facts mixed up. I will explain a few things straight from the horses mouth so to speak!!!
I have been a meat hygiene inspector for the last ten years, so here are the facts as I have found them.

    1. Every abattoir has government vets to check every animal before it is slaughtered. ( checks for good health and welfare)
2.The slaughter of every animal is conducted by a skilled and trained operative who has been licensed by the vet.
3.The slaughter process and the carcass is monitored by an inspector (again health and welfare and hygiene)

This is regardless of the type of slaughter.

When welfare is breached action can be taken, prosecutions and licenses removed.

Halal meat is not stunned. The slaughter is blessed. The sheep is pinned down and the throat is slit. The efficency of this depends on the size of the animal and the strength of the slaughter man. It is then hung up to bleed.

Western; sheep go into a restrainer/ convayor belt and when they reach the end point are stunned using electrocution (usually, bolt if horned). They are rendered senseless. They have their throats slit and are hung up to bleed.

The process does vary between abattiors.
The process is different for other species.
There are no visible differences between the carcasses.
    Neither bleeds out quicker.
I have come across many halal people who prefer to stun the animal.
Halal meat fetches a higher market price.
All slaughter must follow current legislation - but there are exceptions in the case of religious slaughter.

Nothing is ever fully perfect....but animal welfare and public health is taken seriously. The inspectors are independant and often work in hostile enviroments as their presence is sometimes not welcome.

Personnally I would prefer Shish kebab- more likely to get lamb than old ewe!! If you have to season anything too much then the orginal taste can't be too great. Also you don't get to read the ingrediants list- could include any meat.
Doner kebab meat says nothing about lamb!!
  • Excellent post, kaka72 - you have a very clear, straight-forward posting style.

I'm actually vegan, so this doesn't make any difference to the choices I make :) but just out of interest, would you mind clarifying something?

You say that many halal people prefer to stun the animal. In this case, what is the difference between halal meat and non-halal, other than the former being blessed?

Also, since both are hung up to bleed, is there any difference here - i.e. is the halal meat hung for longer?

  • Thanks for that Kaka72....v v helpful post :)

I think there is also a bit of controversy going on within the halal meat industry regarding animals that are stunned beforehand or not.

I went to our local halal butchers a few days ago, and I noticed a big sign that was put up notifying that all their stock aren't stunned beforehand....

However, a few years ago when I went to Romford to a slaughterhouse there, I saw that the animals were stunned beforehand and then were slitted - the only difference is that the halal meat were slitted by muslims who I presumed said their blessings beforehand. Other than that...no differences.

In all honesty because I don't need to, my OP was for recipe suggestions for a non-Halal kebab because I've already taken the time out for myself to do the research and come up with my own conclusions instead of being told other people's opinions. I believe people should think for themselves and if they are interested in it, the information is available.
Then why include the following statement in your OP unless you intended to provoke debate?
Basically I absolutely love my kebabs and have one every weekend but I'm very worried that Halal meat in them really goes against my principals on cruelty to animals.
You could quite easily have asked for non-Halal recipes without making reference to cruelty, had that been your intention.

Quite frankly I find your tone very patronising and downright rude in some instances throughout this thread so will not be commenting further, and will know to avoid any future threads you start!

lol when I have time later for a full reply I shall (supposed to be working hard right now), but the BNP link was just to show the list of the schools currently serving Halal meat without their parents permission. That's the first webpage with the list on from I'm Feeling Lucky, so don't read anything in to that above and beyond this. I did do a copy&paste job anyway so nobody would have to click the link.

I would like to quickly point out before I dash off that the BNP link was nothing to do with research in to animal suffering (Shock horror!!). For those of you who seem unable (lol) to tell apart a list of schools from scientific research, it seems as though you should probably sit down and *think* before typing.

I don't understand how some of you ended up so !!!!!! as to not be able to tell a list of schools apart from a scientific paper :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: You really can't make this stuff up :rotfl:
