I'm new to these boards but I've been reading everything I can for about 3 days now as I'm in the process of claiming unfair charges from Nat West, Lloyds, MBNA and Morgan Stanley. What I would like to know today is when I looked on my Nat West statements for the last three years (since I started having serious financial difficulties) every month Nat West have charged me (on top of their £200+ bounced dd charges etc) a £90 referral charge! Anyone know what this is? I know I should've noticed it before but I did not open my post on and off for two years (post natal depression, pardon the pun). Thank you.
NatWest 1st account £985 refunded 2nd acount £5500 refunded (full amounts!)
LLOYDS TSB £1500 refunded (full amount)
MBNA VISA 1st letter requesting list of charges 02/03/07
MORGAN STANLEY FULL AMOUNT refunded £235!!
CAPITAL ONE offer of £96 MCOL 28/04 MAY 25th FULL AMOUNT £309.85
NATWEST VISA £515 FULL AMOUNT REFUNDED
HALIFAX LBA CLAIMING £2376.31MCOL 08/05 SETTLED£2496.31 FULL AMOUNT REFUNDED

    All in all - £11,420+

Can I claim back charges relating to overseas money transfers? I get charged £20 by Lloyds every time I send money to Turkey. I'm sure it doesn't cost this to do it, so am I entitled to challenge this? Any help appreciated.

No, you can’t claim that back.

The bank offers you a service, stating the cost. You use that service and they carry out your instructions (i.e. the money gets transferred). Only if they failed to carry out the service, you would be entitled to a refund.

Stop transferring money or shop around, what organisation provides this type of a service somewhat cheaper.

    Caveat emptor!

:confused:My bank charges me £30 when they pay a direct debit if I dont have the money in my account. They do not post any letters only details of charges are on my monthly statement. Would it be wrong to try to get these charges back.

simple answer is no, go for it and good luck :)

Edited: Revised answer is, depending on how much loss they incurred when they paid it. Was the amount they actually paid out (loss) a lot more than the £30 they charged ? If my bank charged £30 for paying a £1.99 direct debit I would consider that unfair and disproportionate to any loss they incurred so making the charge unlawful. It all in the charge for actual loss really. Hope that helps :)

Can anyone tell me what, 'Account Maintenance Charges' are? Charged £15 every month for about 2 years this charge is in addition to £28 excessive o/d charges and also whether o/d facility has been used or not. When I began Internet Banking this charge was stopped. Before this, I received only 1 letter, and that only I phoned and complained.
I bank with BOS. I have posted this before - but can't even find the thread - not too good with all this. I should be most grateful for any help as to whether charges can also be claimed!
    Thanks!

Phone your bank and ask them what their Account Maintenance Charges are.

Have posted this already, but probably in the wrong place. Will be grateful for any help you can give. Thanks

These are for exceeding your agreed overdraft limit only applied if you are over limit in that month and debited on a specific date the next month. So overdrawn in Feb charged for whatever made you overdrawn eg bounced cheque, returned D/D etc at £xx and then in March charged another £xx. Basically a penalty and therefore claimable!!! gleaned from Consumer action Group website.
