  • ...Priceless...
  • Hi All
Have just found this site and want to ask a question.
I have lived in France for the past 3 years, and everytime i make a withdrawal i get charged for it. Normally between £1.50 and £5.00 which is costing me quite a lot of money.
Can I claim these charges back?
    TIA

No you can't, the bank or ATM in France has more than likely levied part of this charge to your bank.

    no you cannot.

Look into getting the Nationwide Debit Card that has no loading anywhere in the world meaning no £1.50 for taking your money out.
Save saynoto0870.com in your favorites, and stop giving companies more £££ dialling 0870 numbers when you can dial freephones or cheaper alternatives
call your credit card company, tell them that you want to leave, 99% of the time theyll lower your APR%
Remember when that Bank Manager or Salesperson smiles at you, all he sees is £ notes. Dont forget the motto, "the wider their grin, the more debt your in"

  • I presume reclaiming bank charges excludes interest payments on overdrafts.

  • I would be much appreciated if someone could give me advice on the questions I have asked below, as I am quite worried about the future if doing this but feel I have the right to claim back unfair charges.

Going back via my online banking about 5 years roughly, I found about £1,600.00 of charges on my current account. Should I use what I have written down (on a piece of paper) as my evidence if required, or should I like many others write asking for all the charges via their statements they send you with the £10.00 fee I understand you pay for them as better evidence if required? (also, if do pay for them, do you just make the payment out to Lloyds TSB?, and can you send a postal order or does it have to be cheque?)

I understand that I can charge 8% interest, is this on the final sum I presume, or 8% on each charge?

Which of these charges, or all can you make a claim on? Overdraft Excess Fee, Unpaid DD Fee, Overdraft Interest?

I have a loan with my bank, still owing about 1 year left I believe approx, and have always paid and never missed a payment as it comes out on the date I get paid so always money there, I believe this is seperate from my current account, but can they close my bank account and keep my loan open, which I think would be hard as the payment comes from my current account every month to pay it back and it could lead to missing payments if its due on exact date my wages go in and no account there?

Unfortunately, I have very low credit scoring, and I feel some of it is down to my bank causing my overdrawn problems, so feel I would be unable to open a parachute (seperate) bank account with another bank as back up as they check your credit rating, so therefore I would be stuck if they closed my bank or attempted to which is worrying me as my wages go in every month and then how would i receive them as has to be via a bank account, should I be worried about this?

Many times, my bank has stopped a direct debit going through as it pushed me over my overdraft limit, and then they took out charges for themselves of overdraft excess charges and unpaid dd charges (2 or 3 exceding £128.00 or more in the early days) and therefore that pushed me over my limit they said the direct debits couldnt have, and this allowed them to hit me with more charges (again) for going overdrawn again, which is because they took their money out when none was there? Is this allowed? This has happened lots of times and I feel let down by my bank.

I am one of those who I am sad to say has let this get spiralled out of my depth, and it has got worse and worse and I havent been able to control it as each month I am constantly overdrawn in my bank due to the heavy charges they hit me with over the last 5-6 years. Lloyds allowed me to increase my overdraft almost every time I asked to help me out (via online) and now has come to a point where basically I am at my last end. I have a wage of approx £515.00 a month, but my overdraft limit has been pushed to £850.00 which they agreed to (and sometimes I do go over this even then because of their charges and bills i need to pay), which means of course when my wages go in every month (as i have bills to pay as well and I have tried to cut down where i can as much as possible), then I am always approx £300.00 overdrawn and I see no way of ever getting back into credit into my account. I thought my bank was only allowed a set overdraft limit depending on peoples income? I have been allowed one and a half times my wages almost and wondered if this was allowed by law as I said I would never be in credit again and I can't see any light at the end of the tunnel? I have tried speaking to Lloyds about this, and went in on appointment one time but after speaking to someone in the office, I just got given a phone to call their main offices to speak to (while inside my bank) someone who cut me off half way through which I found extremely rude and offered no more help themselves but to say, well speak to the ombudsmen about if if you want, and i did and never got anywhere with it. I feel I have been aloyal customer to my bank, for over 20+ years with them since I was a child and its only over the last 5-6 years that I have been felt more and more let down by the way they have treated me.

Is there any more advice anyone can offer me, it would be really much appreciated? I am looking into trying to claim my charges back, although it is very worrying for me, but is their any of the other points people can advice me on?

I dont think you can claim for Overdraft Interest.
If you have the correct sums and dates you dont need to send for statements, if you think you may have missed some ask for a list of penalty charges. Try ringing the bank and asking for the information (I think they know what you'll want them for)
Go to the home pages for more info (and the interest calculator)

    Halifax: claimed £1,028, received £1,028
Yorkshire Building Society: claimed £1,070, received £1,134.20
    Co-Operative Bank: claimed £560, received £575
BOS Mastercard: claiming £184, 2nd letter sent 27/3/07
Capital One Visa 1: claiming £439, 2nd letter sent 27/3/07
Capital One Visa 2: claiming £842, 2nd letter sent 27/3/07

  • Can I reclaim unauthorised borrowing fees?

Can I claim the overdraft interest back with interest - I am not taliking about the interest on the charge value but the actual interest for being overdrawn. I believe that because the bank has screwed us so much over the past 10 years we would never have been overdrawn 6 years ago. The amount I am looking to claim is about 8 grand and the max o/d has been approx 2.5 grand. They refused to let my partner have an overdraft of more than a weeks' salary and most people get a months worth - they have had fortune out of us!

Also, when they sent the bank charges information they missed approximately 1 year of accounts out toward the end of 2005 - 2006 - this was a heavily charged period of time and I wonder if they hoped we wouldn't notice! I added that up to just over 3 grand. I also believe that we should, as consumers be infomed that we could challenge these charges, by the banks, when the legislation was passed and it should form part of their code of conduct and be in their information that they send regarding fees/charges, etc - as that is surely part of your contract with them?

Has anyone got any ideas on this?

Please read post 4 in Reclaim Help Thread linked to in my signature for what can and can't be claimed. If you don't understand what a charge is on your list of charges/statements from the bank please phone the bank and ask. They will have a leaflet on what their current charges are.

There is also a post in there regarding claiming the interest you can claim which excludes the interest you go overdrawn with over spending.
