Although I would be completely mortified that my son stole something I would admit it as soon as i found out!

Maybe the bullies had told her they wanted money and the only way she could get money was by stealing it.

Could be, but the OP said "She had thrown the purse away, spent the money but still had the vouchers that she would return to my daughter the next day at school".

That's what the girl told her mum, which was relayed back to the OP.

As I read it, the mother didn't know her daughter was being bullied so maybe if the girl was scared to tell her parents that she was being bullied for cash, she said that she spent the money rather than tell her mum the truth that it was in turn taken from her?

There was a couple of little thugs at our school who would demand money from some of the other kids and the kids would pay up. It wouldn't surprise me if kids these days are demanding more than the traditional lunch money... after all, those iPods they all want are expensive.

I had another call from the girl's mother a few weeks later saying that they would replace the purse and the money but nothing ever came of it.

Why am I not surprised at this? This attitude is probably the bigger reason why her own DD is theiving and thinking it's acceptable, she's getting away with it.
