Is DD's friend a thief?

Why not leave it up to her parents?
If I were the girl's mother and the OP went straight to the police instead of telling me (and then the police turned up at my house) I would be incredibly embarrassed. I don't see that there's anything to be gained here from going in heavy handed when for all we know, the girl's parents may deal with the situation perfectly well. They should certainly be given the chance.
Fair point
Was thinking more if they were not prepared to even discuss it / get daughter to admit it0 -
At 13 this girl is old enough to know right from wrong. *If* she has stolen from her friend, whilst at her house, then that is really off.
Out of interest, if someone had stolen something from your house and you could prove it, how old would they have to be before you considered calling the police? I mean that as a genuine question. I am just interested to know.0 -

At 13 she is at the age of criminal repsonsibility so as such if she has done it she should able to deal with any consequences0 -
might be better to speak to her parents and ask them instead of blowing things totally out of proportion
Do you really think kids are stupid enough to believe the Police would even care about such a small amount of money?
The police would be made to care around here, but that's the benefit of a decent area.;)0 -

Precisely. Am quite shocked that some poster asked if the police would even care about someone stealing such a small amount of money. Surely that comment somewhat misses the point. I guess it greatly depends on how you've been raised and what your own morals are.0 -

Same in my area too fang. The police have asked all the local residents in my neighbourhood to sign up to a new scheme. They text us to say when they will be patrolling the area and if there are any issues or problems we can phone them and they will come round and resolve it. They certainly wouldn't see theft from someones home as too much to be bothered with. But then I live in a decent area too.0 -

I think the poster's point was that the police may have bigger things to think about. There are lots of things I'd rather they investigated than some kid possibly stealing her friend's purse. It's not about morals, it's about how much work they can fit into their day.
I wouldn't call the police, not so much because of her age but because it's not a great amount of money (OK, it's a lot to the daughter, but not to the rest of us) and it's only happened once.
Anyway, shall we see what the girl's parents do first? All this talk of police may be wildly premature.0 -
No reply yet ?, must be busy watching re-runs of Jeremy Kyle ? , perhaps they would be more concerned if the thieving little brat had burgled their house ?0
