Help with a smelly carpet, please!

I've got a bit of a problem that is quite embarrasing :o.

My 8 year old daughter has been weeing on her bedroom carpet in the night (don't ask ) and now the carpet absolutely stinks. I've had air fresheners, shake and vac, carpet deoderiser spray, 1001 and yesterday we hired a Rug Doctor and gave it 3 washes.

It still stinks :eek::mad:!!

What else can I try as I can smell it every time I go upstairs and it's driving me mad. I'd replace the carpet but it's only 10 months old but I've got a feeling there's no alternative.

I'm sure some of you hardcore OSers must have a solution.

Try white vinegar worked gently into the carpet - a fairly strong solution.

thing is it soaks into your underlay (i had this exact problem with my son ) maybe a professional carpet cleaner person that has the huge industrial cleaners (they seem to do wonders on how clean is your house) personally even after half ripping it up trying to clean underneath and trying to replace the partial piece of underlay i ended up ripping it up. doesnt sound very good does it im sorry. i left him without a carpet and put down lino until it stopped too.

Yes, I agree. The liquid will have soaked deep into carpet and underlay and possibly even your floorboards - so whichever cleaning agent you choose you are going to have to make sure it gets to soak in every bit as deeply. Surface cleaning just will not do the job.

There are a couple of older threads that might be of some help here...

  • Hi finc,

it might not work for you if it has soaked right through but when my children have been sick and i have tried everything to get rid of the smell for days someone suggested Bicarbonate of soda...

You sprinkle it on, leave overnight and hoover up in the morning. It has always worked much to my amazement!!!

    HTH

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll try the bicarb next and see how it goes. Would I use the vinegar neat? Unfortunately she didn't just use one spot of her bedroom when pretending it was a toilet so the whole of the carpet has been *used* at some point. It's going to be a big job . I think I'll make her do it so she remembers where the bathroom is.

I do think it's gone through to the underlay so I'll end up replacing the carpet and underlay. Think she'd better put a carpet on her Christmas list ;)

you may find the smell goes once the carpet dries out could take days though.I found this out having washed my carpet as my exs dog had an accident. It stank whilst wet but was fine once dried.
I washed it again though to be sure.
Biological washing powder digests the urine.

The carpet's dried now and it still stinks. I've put a load of bicarb on it and I'll vac it up in the morning and see if it's any better.

I did lift a bit of the carpet before and I can smell it on the underlay so I'm not getting my hopes up :(. Luckily she's stopped this habit/phase so if I do replace the carpet there won't be a repeat situation.

Has anyone got any good ideas for how to get the smell of urine out of a carpet? My 4 year old son has left a large "stain" on my carpet and it really smells. I don't know what to do to get rid of it. All ideas gratefully received. Thanks.

It's a protein stain so it needs to be washed with a solution of bio washing powder.

The thing is, it will have soaked through the backing and possibly into the floor boards too, so you might have to take it up and clean underneath too.

Do remember to blot and rinse, blot and rinse.

    HTH :)
