My DH says that he would not use a rug doctor because it hasn't got enough extraction power you would be better using a dry foam at home rather than trying to do a professional job with an inadequate machineBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

We had a similar problem in the hallway and it was driving me mad, no amount of cleaning would shift it.
I remembered reading advice from Mioliere on another thread and went out and bought a cheap bottle of vodka and poured most of it over the smelly area, it soaked through the carpet and the underlay and soaked into the floorboards too.
Seemed like a waste and the hall stunk of voddie for well over a week but now its as if it had never been there - all fresh and nice.

Most definitely
It was still a struggle to see it poured over the carpet though

hey
I need to ask abit of a puzzling question. This morning i cleaned my carpets with the rug doctor, went out for the day leaving all windows open and when i came in this evening my carpets absolutely stink and i don't know what has gone wrong or how to get rid of the smell but its digusting. the smell is like when a tom cat has sprayed but that can't be the case as im 5 floors up lol.
What could it be and any suggestions on how to get rid of this horrid smell.

This has happened to us too, i cleaned the carpet monday with the rug doctor, left it dry then replaced the furniture and llast night the room stunk of cats wee, ive dragged the rug (this is awful smelling so it must be ingraned in it now) outside to airover the swing set but i cant face going to bed tonight now! ive left bicarb on the carpet overnight and the hoover wont hoover it up! so ill try again now to clean it up, and leave window open for the day to air!
Is this a common problem with the rug doctor???:A :j0 -
Hi guys,
I hope someone can give me a bit of advice.
I have a little boy, well he is 1 now but he was a bit of a sickly baby and the carpet in the lounge smells a bit funny (milky) if you know what I mean. ( as he was sick on it a lot!)
We have used a Vax carpet cleaner a couple of times but I can still smell it.
Is there anything else I can use on the carpet, I have also used all the normal sprays etc.
Thanks for any help.

If the carpet is clean I would buy a ruddy great box of bicarbonate of soda, sprinkle it on and leave it overnight and then hoover it up in the morning. Bicarb is great for absorbing smells but you have to remove the source properly first.0

If you can see any stains, get a scrubbing brush and some soapy water and try and clean a few of them as best you can. Then as BitterandTwisted says sprinkle bicarb over night and hoover up in the morning.
If that doesn't work you can hire a carpet shampooer which are really easy to use and give your carpet a good clean. You'll be horrified by how filthy they are (not yours, all carpets!).0 -
Just to add to the other excellent suggestions using bicarb:vinegar can work as an great air freshener (though I agree that you need to tackle the source).
To make it take:
-1 teaspoon bicarb
-1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 2 cups water
Mix together in a spray bottle. It'll foam a bit, once it stops foaming, put the lid on and shake well. And there you have an inexpensive and eco-friendly air freshener!
