Thank you all very much for the usefull tips.
I'm going to get the bicarbonate of soda and cover the lounge floor, as I have already cleaned it with a carpet cleaner.
I will do it in the morning then go off to work for the day and hoover when I get home, this should give it a good 9 hours.
Thanks again x:)0 -
Did it work for you in the end? Ive merged this with our smelly carpet thread

I would definately go with the bicarb of soda, but if you can pull carpet back out 1st on floorboards, 2nd on underlay then on top of carpet, then leave over night a pain I know but at least its getting to all layers. you could also try cat litter, which is also good for the bottom of wheelie bins. Good luck;)Never play with your Bellybutton your Bum could fall off.:rotfl:0

A few days ago I spilt cup of tea on the lounge carpet . So I sprayed on some foam carpet cleaner and left for a few minutes then rubbed it in with a wet cloth. Unfortunately it was a kitchen cloth that was a bit dirty and it was not till I finished using it I realised it smelt awful. So now the stain was nearly gone but now the carpet and in fact whole rooms stinks. So I put on some more carpet cleaner with a different cloth and finally some talc. Nothing got rid of it.
As I am putting the house up for sale next week I called the carpet cleaning man and he came yesterday and cleaned the lounge and hall carpet and as the carpet was still damp last night it just smelt of carpet cleaner.
However today the carpet is dry and that part of it still stinks. I need to get rid of the smell by Monday when the estate agent comes. Any idea anyone??0 -

Thanks for the replies. I will try Bicarb overnight. However I have realised that the carpet is still damp where the stain is so I have been drying with a hairdryer. I will then do the bicarb thing overnight. Why did I not realise there would be a Smelly Carpet thread on here. I just love MSE.0
