My peppers are playing up this year too.......it's either them or the aubergines, but this year the aubs behaved themselves and got 7.5 out of 8 (one is a runt).

Tomatoes all came good, must have about 120 seedlings - maybe I went a bit OTT, but am growing for neighbours too.

Will have to sow and grow some more Purple Ukraine tomatoes, even though they are a bit too sweet for me - I will use them in sauces, but it seems that all you chaps that went on the seedswappers site want them, so will be growing to save seed for 2012.

(Will post on how to save tomato seeds in Aug/Sept - or will do it now if there's enough interest, so you can copy and paste the info into your own gardening folder - let me know).

Oooh, can I join in? I need something to keep giving me a kick up the bum to get things done, I tned to be a fair weather gardener... ;)

I don't have a huge garden, but it is a reasonable size by todays standards. I manage to massacre one of my borders at the weekend, which is where I'll plant my runner beans up wigwams, and hopefully French Beans and peas too. I need to get a few tomato plants into pots, and I have a new plastic four tier growhouse to play with. I'm down south, so hopefully should be able to avoid frosts completely soon.

My rhubarb has already started to sprout and has been weeded round, but I'm not sure what do wi with the raspberries I planted about a year ago - I suspect I should have pruned them long before now! I only have half a dozen canes, and need to get some proper supports in for them now.
Never underestimate the power of the techno-geek... ;)

a brilliant day on the allotment today and have started hoeing, which I like. Another raised bed made and filled with top soil plus a row of parsnips and another of carrots added to an existing row of parsnips and are warm under fleece over hoops. I have been growing garlic cloves in my back garden, 28 in root trainers and 4 cloves in pots and they are in an allotment raised bed as of today. They had the same compost and were side by side outside but the root system in the trainers is far far better. My rotation is going to be struggling to fit in all the leeke that I want so I have decided that I won`t be growing shallots next year as I use leeks far more. They are also under environmesh as I don`t think it will be too long before the bugs get going. Anyway I am going to start a timeline of actual planting dates to see what is most successful

I am expecting rain on wednesday hence the seed sowing. I also planted lady christi potatoes and am fully ready to lay fleece down if neccessary

Jekyll and hyde this weather so am taking no chances

It is going to freeze tonight again! The greenhouse thermometer showed 1.4 C when I went to check at about 7pm, so it is 3 candles on and hoping for the best... Might have another look before going to bed, just to make sure that the temperature is a bit higher and put another candle if needed.

Oh, and the max temperature reached 21C today!!!! It was a lovely day...

At the moment my toilet rolls have been planted and are in the airing cupboard but nothing showing yet. :D

Am I being dense and missing out on some very valuable seed tray space?I just assumed you would need to put seed trays in the light (window sill etc)? I am very new to this, usually just put seeds straight into the ground and keep my ffingers crossed, water too much and cry and snivel over the outcome of my veg lol! Does the airing cupboard thing apply to all seeds or just sweet peas? Appologies for having a dizzy moment!:o

Not at all...................I just find that a few days in the airing cupboard gets things going at this time of year.

As soon as something sprouts.........I remove from airing cupboard and put on windowsill until I feel they will cope in unheated greenhouse.

I spoke too soon about the sweet peas doing nothing.

Went to take out my cherry toms which had sprouted and tiny shoots coming up the loo rolls!! Yay!!!

Must admit though that the year I had great results with sweet peas.............I think I started them off in November and over wintered them with no airing cupboard help???????????

    Its all trial and error.

I think its a case of once you have two true leaves you can pot them on to small pot.

I've sowed my sweet peas (without soaking) in toilet rolls / newspaper pots and just left them in the utility room to germinate. They've started coming up but I was just wondering how many plants I need as I've never grown sweet peas before!
I've got some mixed climbing ones I'd like to have climb up a standard width of trellis (2 feet?) .. how many plants will I need for this?

Also would like to do two hanging baskets with the dwarf sweet peas I bought. Has anyone grown sweet peas in hanging baskets as I'm having trouble finding advice about this.
They're these ones if it helps
