Well, my plants suffered. I had to resow most of the tomatoes, half the peppers, all the marigolds, lost some chillies, taragon, basil, etc. Resown all of them and brought all inside for the next few days!

I know I have sown more than I needed, as I was 'expecting' some not to survive my care, but not so soon! Fingers crossed they will germinate soon and I can look forward to my new plants.

I took out radishes and broad beans back to the greenhouse this morning. Fingers crossed they will be ok!

Can I plant beetroot this month? How's best to do them - indoors on trays, or pots, or modules, or outdoors...?

I have put my seeds in the raised bed at the beginning of March having started them off with a bit of a soak in water prior to planting. I do have the patch covered with a sheet of plastic though with plenty of space in between for growth and air circulation. Maybe depends on the variety but the Boltardy ones said outdoors from March.
  • Well what a super thread! and so apt for me - as I was just talking to my girls about what we could plant this year and Leeks were at the top of our list, and we are going to have a go this weekend at planting some.

Last year I manged throughout the year to grow tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries and runner beans - but I would really like to put much more time and effort into our veg plot this year.

I'll let you know how I get on and will be grateful for all the tips I can get about what to plant.

I've just planted some cut and come again lettuce to grow inside for now. Also planted a big pot up in the garden with my leeks.
I've planted a couple of small pots with chives and thyme - thinking about being able to pot up the thyme into nice pots as teachers presents in July???
I've started off some pansy seeds to go on the windowsill - eventually I will plant these at my allotment in memory to my Grandfather whose allotment I remember fondly as a child.

It was very frosty here last night and I lost 2/3 of my tomatoes so have set to and planted more, lesson learnt and I will sow later next year. 3/4 of one tray of tagetes in agralan plugs died and I think they got too dry so have re-sown them. Dangerous time of the year here, sun is baking during the day and dh was outside at the back in t shirt and shorts but night time plummets so all little greenhouses now have 3 layers of bubble wrap on top and patio grow has 2 layers of fleece over the plastic. Tomorrow I will check carefully one tray at a time for moisture, I could do with a meter of some sort as the plugs are too little to test properly with a finger. I have replanted the toms that were left and they are now in the lower level of a polycarbonate greenhouse but I am not too bothered about them as I`ll be happy with the new ones. Incidentally not one alicante tomato suffered

Oh I'm so excited, can't wait to move so that I can start on transforming my yard into a cute vegetable oasis! :j:j

Popped into Lidl's today and picked up some swiss chard. They only had the white ones in although as I've never tried chard before I think I'll prefer the taste, would like to grow the colourful ones too just because they look so pretty and DH will probably like the taste if it's stronger.

Also picked up some pepper seeds (wasn't intending on growing those) but as I love Roast cherry tomato and Roast pepper soup it seemed like a good idea to try growing peppers seeings as I'll hopefully have lots of toms! :T

Also picked up a book from the library on junk containers to give me some ideas. Would like to use wooden boxes (once I've found someone to help me build them), but also going to use old tins and cans as well and anything else that looks fun. I live by the beach so some buckets will have to appear somewhere!! :D
